Head 2 Head

Chapter 24 -Even if society condemns me, I don't care.

The love story of Jan and Jett is like a drama. The young woman met her husband when she was twenty years old. At that time, she hadn't finished her studies yet, but because she was helping a senior acquaintance on the set of a film where he was the lead actor, she had the opportunity to see him occasionally. As they met more often, they became familiar with each other. She didn't even realise when it all started. Before she knew it, they were talking to each other in a way that went beyond being colleagues, until they finally decided to become a couple.

Jan understood everything. She understood that her lover was a trending celebrity with few industry connections. At that time, Jett was only two years older than her. They kept their relationship a secret, never telling anyone. They dated like this for almost two years until, just before graduating from their fourth year of university, Jan became pregnant. She remembers how confused she and Jett were at the time, but neither of them considered having an abortion.

They quietly registered their marriage, becoming a fully married couple without revealing it to anyone. Everything seemed fine, and Jan had no problem with living in secrecy because she knew the man loved her.

The situation dragged on until the young woman gave birth to Jinn. By then, Jett was considered a celebrity, and every move he made became news. This meant he couldn't visit her every day, but he never missed a call. Jett loved Jinn very much, more than anything. Every time he spoke of their son, his voice was incredibly gentle, and Jan's love for this man grew stronger every day.

But happiness is often fleeting. When Jinn was four years old, Jett’s family interfered in their relationship. Jett’s grandmother wanted them to break up, feeling Jinn wasn't worthy. Jan had heard her lover mention this before. Jinn said his grandmother was strict and controlling, and Jett’s father also followed her orders, making her the most powerful figure in the family. He only got the acting job because of a promise he made to the production company: once everything was settled, he would leave the industry and take over the business as their only grandson. That's why they agreed.

What follows is more like a soap opera than anything else. Jan is threatened in every way to break up with Jett, but the worst is that they want to take Jinn away, which she absolutely refuses to do.

Jan's work started having problems. By then, she had started her own brand. She was constantly accused of copying others' work, and her work was criticised, damaging her burgeoning reputation. Many incidents occurred, including defamation and reputation-smuggling, for about two years. Jett tried to manage the situation, but no matter what he did, it never stopped. One problem would disappear, and another would arise. Everyone knew who was responsible, but no one could do anything about it because of the power dynamic.

During that time, there were constant rumours about Jett dating the daughters of executives, famous actresses, or even politicians. And his fans always commented that they were a perfect match, as if those creating the rumours wanted Jan to feel unworthy. This went on for a while until rumours about her and Jett leaked out. Of course, among all the women who had been linked to him, she was the only one who felt unworthy.

Jan was even ambushed by the young man's fans, who wanted to ask her about this, because she was the most approachable of everyone. This went on for a while. Jan didn't want to be harassed, so she chose to work from home most of the time.

Until Jett decided to break up, not because of those rumours, but because he was worried about her safety, the young man knew that everything wouldn't end there; it had dragged on for years, and she didn't want to wait any longer. He didn't want his wife to be slandered in front of the whole country. For Jett, it was he who wasn't worthy, not her.

Jan tried to hold on, saying they would get through this together, but Jett didn't think so. He simply said that as long as the woman and the child were safe, it was okay even if he couldn't be by their side anymore.

After that, she could no longer contact her husband. Those terrible things disappeared as if they had never happened, like a dream. Jan and her child lived peacefully again, but she was never truly happy. Jett took on fewer jobs in the entertainment industry, gradually distancing himself until, two years later, he announced his retirement to return and manage the family business.

Time passed by like this, but every birthday—her marriage anniversary and Jinn’s birthday—a gift always arrived without fail. Jan never opened them, but she never threw them away. Everything remained in the gift box kept deep inside the storage room, and in her heart.

Every time she heard news about Jett, the young woman would be terrified. She feared news of his marriage, his engagement, or something life-threatening. She feared that one day he would come to her wanting a divorce. But luckily, that didn't happen. No matter how angry or hateful she claimed to be, she knew deep down she had never forgotten him. Jett was still her only husband. She didn't want to let him go. At least, she wanted to be the only one who held the title of his legally married wife for the rest of her life.

It wasn't until three years ago that Jett appeared before her. He didn't come for a divorce; he came to ask for another chance. Now, he wasn't the Jett he once was. He had power, and he could provide security for her and their child. But Jan was still afraid. Afraid that if something like this happened again, she would be abandoned by him once more, even if it was because he loved her too much.

Jett recounted everything he had done, explaining why the other side had stopped interfering with her and Jinn, despite initially promising to take Jinn away. He described that their marriage was never divorced and that everything else he had obtained was through his own means. As their only nephew, he used this as leverage, promising to take their position and grow their business in exchange for their ceasing their involvement with her and their child. They agreed, believing they could eventually control him. But they were wrong. The young man began consolidating everything in his grasp to free himself from this control.

Before long, he achieved his goal. Initially, they didn't notice, but when he rejected numerous marriage proposals and refused to bear an heir, they became increasingly anxious. However, it was too late. Jett had staged a "rebellion" within the family, establishing himself as the leader and disregarding his father's authority. Two years later, his grandmother passed away, and Jett became truly free.

Jett had been watching Jan and their child all along, but he didn't dare approach them. He was afraid, hesitant, but most of all, he felt ashamed and pathetic about his failure as the head of the family. He said he felt guilty for choosing that method to create a protective shield for his family, but if given the choice again, he would choose the same way. At least everyone would be safe, even if it meant heartbreak.

For three full years, the other party pursued his wife again, meticulously crafting everything step by step until she softened and agreed to try dating him. However, Chan chose not to tell Jinn, knowing her son's character well; Jinn would never approve. Jett also accepted this, feeling guilty and regretful all along.

But everything fell apart now, when Jinn happened to visit her on the same day that Jett was there. If it were any other man, her son would just be resentful and sulky, but this was his own father, the one who had created the deep-seated trauma in him. His anger, sadness, and incomprehension were greater than anyone else's. Luckily, Jerome was there; otherwise, Jan would never have been able to control her son's hot temper.

Jerome sat beside his boyfriend, feeling out of place once again. Opposite them were Jinn’s mother and father. The four of them sat facing each other in silence for a while now, ever since Jan explained the situation to their son. Jinn remained silent, only gazing at his parents with a thoughtful expression.

"Jinn, say something," Jan felt nervous in front of her son for the first time. It was as if she had a boyfriend and her son had caught her, even though the boyfriend in question was his own father.

Jinn had nothing to say. In truth, he wanted to lash out, to yell at the man who had abandoned him and his mother for over ten years. But after thinking about it, it would be pointless. No matter how angry he got, what would change? Because he knew his mother still loved this man.

The loud sigh from the person at the centre of the situation made the three people nearby feel awkward, as they were used to a hot-tempered, volatile Jinn rather than this calm version.

“Say whatever you want to feel, but say it nicely, understand?” Jerome whispered, but his lover met his sharp, accusing and contemptuous gaze.

"You told me to calm down, and I'm trying. So what do you want?" Jinn pushed his tongue against his cheek mischievously, his attitude clearly looking for trouble, causing Jerome's eye to twitch.

"I told you to calm down, but not this calm. If you don't say anything, am I supposed to sit here staring at you all night?"

"What can I say? Say I don't allow it? That they shouldn't be together? Should they break up? Will he even listen to me?!" He kicked his boyfriend, who was sitting beside him, hard in the leg.

Those sharp, beautiful eyes, which everyone said were incredibly cunning, were now filled with displeasure as they glared at the two adults—his biological father and mother.

In truth, Jinn understood everything. His mother had told him the story from long ago. But from the perspective of someone who was abandoned, no matter the reason, it's still abandonment, isn't it? He grew up without a father, was teased for being fatherless, and heard people gossip about his mother—sometimes calling her a mistress, sometimes saying she was promiscuous and didn't know who the father of the children was. He got through everything on his own two feet. He knew the other person was secretly looking after him, but so what? How could he pretend that nothing had ever happened after being apart for so long?

"Well, it's Mom's love life, isn't it? She's never interfered in Jinn’s romantic affairs, so what can Jinn say?" Jin took a slow, deep breath, feeling that she had partially set aside her own prejudices, before calmly speaking to the waiting person.

"Jinn," Jan murmured, knowing that her son simply didn't mind the possibility of her and Jett getting back together, but his matter wasn't included in that.

"Janthra, it's alright," Jett smiled faintly at his wife and looked gently at his son, who had grown as tall as him. This was good enough. As for the father-son relationship, he would try to rebuild it himself, even if it took his whole life.

"And I hope that what you said earlier is truly different from what it was in the past. I don't want my mother to be under public scrutiny because of the news about you. But on the other hand, if you can't publicly make her your wife, or give her the respect she deserves... then it's better if you don't come back. My mother might accept it, but I won't. Do you understand?"

"That's what I intended. Now everything has changed. There's absolutely no reason to do anything disrespectful to Jan anymore." Announcing to the whole world that this woman was his wife was something Jett had always demeaned himself to, an utter display of his own incompetence.

"Fine. Because if you can't do it, even if society condemns you, I'll never let you get close to her again for the rest of your life." Jinn’s resolute and determined gaze made everyone present realise that he meant what he said.

"I can do it. I can definitely do it."

The time ahead might be tough for Jett, but he's willing to do it. Willing to gradually reconnect with his son and new wife, and dedicate the rest of his life to making amends to them all. He will be a good father and husband, something he missed the opportunity to do because of his own weakness.
