In Love With An Idiot

Chapter 3

On the way, Jian Suiying rang his mate to say he was bringing a friend over for a night out. Sure enough, the moment they got out of the car, his friend was waiting for them by the entrance.

“Suiying, what the fuck have you been so busy with lately? Haven't seen you for days. I opened a bar, and you don't even come to show your support.” The man approaching them tossed his cigarette end into a bin, then came over with a grin and clapped Jian Suiying on the shoulder.

“Twisted my ankle a few days ago. I've been stuck at home recovering. Came over as soon as I was better, didn't I? Not bad, Little Tang. You've only been open a few days and your car park's nearly full.”

“Of course. Great location.” As Little Tang led them inside, he shot Li Yu a rather suggestive glance.

Li Yu met his gaze without expression.

Jian Suiying knew at once that Little Tang had got the wrong idea. Worried that Li Yu might be offended, he hurried to make introductions.

“Here, let me introduce you. This is Li Xuan's younger brother, Li Yu. Li Yu, this is the young master of the Tang family. You can call him Brother Tang.”

Little Tang looked surprised. “Li Xuan's younger brother?”

Li Yu nodded. “Brother Tang.”

Little Tang was a smooth operator. Realising his mistake, he immediately approached with a broad smile and shook Li Yu's hand.

“Oh, so you're Li Xuan's younger brother! I've never met you before. In my mind, his little brother was still a child. Look how much you've grown! Come in, come in. Nothing but distinguished guests tonight.”

The three of them entered the bar one after another. Jian Suiying looked up, and his heart sank.

Li Yu surveyed the room and instantly understood what sort of place it was.

Jian Suiying was deeply embarrassed. He genuinely hadn't known. He certainly hadn't brought Li Yu here on purpose, and now he was afraid he'd given himself away before he'd even made a move.

Li Yu turned an enquiring, assessing gaze on him. Jian Suiying gave an awkward laugh.

“Well, it's my first time here. I honestly didn't know this was that sort of…”

The music was so loud that Little Tang hadn't heard them. He grabbed Jian Suiying by the arm and shouted in his ear, “Come on! There are some friends in a private room, a few you know. Want to come and join us?”

Jian Suiying prised his hand away.

“I haven't been here since you opened, have I? How the fuck was I supposed to know… Forget it. We're not going into the private room.”

Little Tang laughed and slapped him on the back. “What's wrong with you? Since when did you turn into such a prude?”

Jian Suiying swiftly jabbed him in the waist and motioned towards Li Yu with his eyes.

Little Tang understood at once.

Jian Suiying leant close to Li Yu's ear. “Frightened you, didn't it? Let's not bother going in.”

Li Yu frowned slightly, the faintest suggestion of a smile playing around his lips. “What's there to be frightened of? We're already here. Let's go in.”

Jian Suiying looked at him in surprise.

He'd assumed that a model student like Li Yu, who didn't smoke or drink, would never be able to accept a place like this.

“You think it's interesting?” he asked cautiously.

Li Yu nodded. “A little.”

“All right, then. Let's go inside.”

Jian Suiying only wanted to spend time with Li Yu tonight, so he didn't enter the private room. Instead, he had Little Tang arrange a booth in a quiet corner.

Whenever Li Yu wasn't looking, Little Tang kept waggling his eyebrows at him meaningfully.

Jian Suiying laughed and cursed. “What's going through that head of yours? I've just brought a friend out for a bit of fun. Is it a crime if the kid happens to be good-looking?”

Little Tang leant close to his ear. “You're seriously not interested in him that way?”

“Seriously, I'm not. Stop imagining things. Go and do whatever you've got to do. You don't have to look after us. We'll sit for a while and leave. And don't tell the others I'm here.”

Little Tang clearly didn't believe a word of it. He left wearing a sly grin.

Li Yu sat in the corner of the sofa, holding a glass of soda water. His face moved in and out of the coloured light as he quietly watched the people at the surrounding tables.

Jian Suiying clinked his drink against Li Yu's glass and took the opportunity to sit closer.

The music was so loud that they had to lean almost cheek to cheek to speak. They were close enough to feel each other's breath against their faces.

After a few glasses, Jian Suiying grew bolder. He leant towards Li Yu's ear and asked, “What are you looking at? What's so interesting?”

Li Yu didn't answer. He simply shook his head with a faint smile.

Jian Suiying said, “Little Li, whether you go into business or become an official, you won't be able to avoid places like this forever. You're not that young any more. How about I take you out more often in future?”

Li Yu glanced at him, his expression unreadable. “Brother Jian, do you often bring Suilin to places like this too?”

“Him? What would I bring him for? No fun at all.”

A barely perceptible trace of mockery flashed through Li Yu's eyes. He stood up.

“I'm going to the toilet.”

Jian Suiying was pleasantly tipsy. The moment Li Yu rose, he reached out and caught hold of his hand.

Li Yu looked down at him in surprise.

The utter clarity and faint coldness in Li Yu's gaze sobered Jian Suiying considerably. He looked at his own hand, not knowing whether to let go or keep holding on. Finally, he gave a sheepish smile.

“Er, I'll come too. Having a bit of trouble getting up.”

Li Yu frowned slightly, hooked an arm under his and hauled him to his feet. As he stood, Jian Suiying thought he heard Li Yu mutter, “That's all you can drink?”

He wondered if he'd misheard and looked at Li Yu, who narrowed his eyes at him. Young Master Jian could certainly handle more alcohol than that, but he decided to play the fool.

“That's all I can handle, apparently. When you won't drink with me, I get drunk really easily on my own. Why don't you carry me to the toilet?”

Li Yu let out an incredulous laugh. “So now it's my fault? If you can't hold your drink, have less.”

“I can't hold my drink?” Jian Suiying scoffed and gave Li Yu a rather cheeky pat on the cheek. “One of these days, I'll show you what a real drinker looks like.”

Li Yu didn't bother arguing. He released him.

“If you can stand, you can get there yourself.”

With that, he turned towards the toilets.

Jian Suiying followed him.

When he came out again, he spotted Li Yu's back almost immediately. Was the boy actually waiting for him? What an unexpected honour! But he soon realised something was wrong. Several men were blocking Li Yu's way.

One of them was a very fat man in his thirties, holding a bottle of beer. His face was red with drink, and he wore rather expensive clothes. In daylight, he might have passed for a respectable gentleman. Right now, though, the leering grin he aimed at Li Yu couldn't have looked more sleazy.

Jian Suiying knew exactly what was going on.

Someone with Li Yu's looks was top of the league in their circle. Forget these lecherous men who'd never seen anything like him; even Jian Suiying, who'd slept with plenty of beauties, had practically drooled over him the first time they met.

Jian Suiying was behind Li Yu and couldn't see his expression. He hurried towards him.

Just then, the fat man put a hand on Li Yu's shoulder and leant towards him, apparently trying to say something.

Li Yu knocked his hand away with a single movement.

The man widened his eyes, evidently unwilling to take the hint, and reached for Li Yu's shoulder again.

This time, Li Yu swatted his hand aside before it even made contact.

The man seemed to lose his temper. He smashed his beer bottle on the floor and reached towards Li Yu once more.

Jian Suiying charged over with murder in his eyes. How dared that fat bastard lay a finger on someone he'd set his sights on? He'd be damned if he didn't beat the man senseless tonight. But before he could reach them, Li Yu raised his hand and seized the man's wrist.

Jian Suiying froze. So did the fat man.

Then Li Yu gave his hand a slight twist, bending the man's wrist backwards with considerable force. Jian Suiying couldn't hear the man's cry from where he stood, but the man's expression made it obvious how much it hurt.

The man dropped to his knees, clutching at Li Yu's hand and howling. His friends immediately lunged forwards to rescue him. Jian Suiying sprang out from behind Li Yu and sent one of them, a man wearing glasses, flying with a kick. The bystanders quickly scattered to form a circle around them, watching the spectacle with interest.

The commotion caught the attention of the security staff. Several tall, heavily built Black bouncers quickly made their way towards them.

Li Yu released the man's wrist.

Jian Suiying caught hold of his arm. “Little Li, are you all right?”

Li Yu gave him a cool glance. “I'm fine.”

Little Tang arrived shortly afterwards and directed the bouncers to haul the fat man up. He lit a cigarette, put it into Jian Suiying's hand and asked with a smile, “Suiying, how do you want to handle this?”

Jian Suiying turned to Li Yu. “These blind fucking idiots. How do you want them dealt with?”

Li Yu took out his phone and checked the time. “Brother Jian, it's almost midnight. I'd like to go home.”

After what had happened, Jian Suiying wasn't in the mood to enjoy himself either. He nodded at once.

“All right, all right. I'll take you home.” He turned to Little Tang. “Just throw them out.”

Little Tang waved his hand. “You heard Young Master Jian. Throw them out.”

Little Tang walked them to the car park and apologised to Li Yu with a cheerful smile.

“Young Master Li, I'm sorry about what happened tonight.”

Li Yu nodded slightly, giving him the courtesy of a reply. “It's fine. Sorry to have caused you trouble.”

“I'll treat you and your brother to a meal one of these days.”

Li Yu smiled but didn't commit himself.

Jian Suiying carefully studied his expression. He felt that his first date with Li Yu had been a complete failure.

Once they were in the car, their heads were still ringing. The abrupt change from overwhelming noise to almost complete silence took a while to get used to. For the first few minutes of the drive to Li Yu's home, neither spoke.

Eventually, Jian Suiying couldn't stand it any longer. “Little Li,” he said softly.

“Mm.” Li Yu was turned towards the window. From Jian Suiying's seat, he could see the pale curve of his neck, the perfect line of his jaw and the small prominence of his collarbone visible above his shirt.

After looking for a couple of moments, Jian Suiying's mouth had already gone dry. He swallowed.

“Are you angry?”

“Me?” Li Yu gave a light laugh. “No. Why would I be?”

“If I hadn't brought you there tonight, you wouldn't have had to put up with that. Let the fat bastard off too lightly…”

“It's nothing…” Li Yu seemed to want to say something more. In the end, he asked, “Why did that man come up to me?”

Jian Suiying felt awkward. “Well, that place is fairly expensive. They saw how young you looked and thought you were…”

Li Yu turned towards him, his gaze fixed on Jian Suiying's face. “Thought I was what?”

Under that scrutiny, Jian Suiying felt guilty. Naturally, he didn't dare say it outright. He laughed instead.

“It's mainly because you're too handsome. Even if you went to an ordinary bar, girls would come up and chat you up, wouldn't they? Only tonight's bloke was more brazen than most. Don't take it to heart, all right? Just pretend a dog came over and sniffed at you a couple of times.”

Li Yu's gaze, as still as water, lingered on him for two or three seconds before slowly moving away.

“Brother Jian, when is Suilin starting work?”

“Probably in a week or two. My dad said he could have some time to enjoy himself first.”

“I'd like to start earlier…”

The following morning, Li Yu arrived at the company with Li Xuan.

Li Xuan had brought Jian Suiying some fine Lingyun Baihao tea and apologised to him yet again. That was more than enough to satisfy Jian Suiying's pride, and he welcomed the brothers into his office with a delighted smile.

“Suiying, I'm leaving our youngest in your hands for these two months. Don't be polite on my account. Make sure you put him through his paces.”

“Now that you've said that, I won't worry about holding back. I'll make sure he gets plenty of experience.”

After exchanging a few more pleasantries, Jian Suiying had his secretary take Li Yu out to familiarise himself with the company. He then sat down with Li Xuan to discuss the land in detail.

Jian Suiying gave him information about the relevant projects and talked enthusiastically about how environmentally friendly the feed was, how it used waste materials, and how promising its future looked.

In the end, Li Xuan promised that, once he returned to Guangxi, he'd help look for suitable land. That alone put Jian Suiying much more at ease. At least there was hope.

They talked for more than two hours, by which time it was almost lunchtime. Jian Suiying wanted to treat Li Xuan to a meal.

Li Xuan looked regretful. “I've got to go home and pack now. I'm catching a flight this afternoon.”

“You still have to eat, even if you've got a flight to catch.”

“My mum specifically told me I had to come home for lunch. I don't get back very often, and she's cooking herself.”

“Oh, well, I can't keep you, then. Is Li Yu going home too?”

“Mm. I'll have him come back by himself this afternoon.”

“All right.” Jian Suiying walked him to the door and joked, “You're leaving your brother's education to me now. Don't feel sorry for him if I work him too hard.”

Li Xuan laughed. “He's entirely in your hands.”

Jian Suiying thought that if Li Xuan knew what he was planning for his younger brother, he'd probably want to strangle him. But to Jian Suiying, the harder a target was to win over, the more worthwhile the challenge, and the sweeter the taste of victory.

Li Yu arrived to report for work promptly after the lunch break.

During the break, Jian Suiying had already overheard several female employees talking about him. Fortunately, Li Yu was so young that, despite their excitement, they understood the age gap. They were content to admire the handsome boy, tease him a little and enjoy a small pleasure in their working lives.

That afternoon, Li Yu turned up in an outfit as casual as sportswear. Jian Suiying wasn't particularly strict about his employees' clothes, but this was a substantial company in a high-end office building. Turning up for work in sportswear really wasn't professional. He'd noticed what Li Yu was wearing that morning but hadn't had time to mention it. Now that Li Yu had come into his office, Jian Suiying frowned as he looked him up and down.

Li Yu followed his gaze, glanced down at himself and spread his hands. “I haven't had time to buy any clothes yet.”

Jian Suiying smiled and shook his head. “At least you know there's a problem. Just don't wear that tomorrow.”

“All right.”

Jian Suiying stood, looking appreciatively at the beautiful young man he'd taken such a liking to.

“So what did you get up to this morning?”

“Not much. Sister Liang showed me round the company and the canteen, and explained some of the basic rules.”

“Mm. If there's anything you don't understand, ask Little Liang.”

Li Yu nodded. “President Jian… what would you like me to do?”

Jian Suiying smiled broadly, showing all his white teeth. “Well, you've only just finished school, and there's all sorts of things you don't know. There are plenty of jobs I wouldn't feel comfortable trusting you with yet. So stay by my side and deal with some of the smaller matters. You'll learn plenty that way. You can be my assistant.”

Li Yu raised an eyebrow. “Then… what are you planning to have Suilin do?”

“I'll arrange something for him later.” Jian Suiying teased, “What, not happy about it? Who was it who said yesterday that he'd obey all his superiors' instructions?”

Li Yu replied, “Of course I'm happy.”

Jian Suiying laughed. “Good. You're a remarkable lad. What other boy your age isn't thinking about nothing but having fun? Yet you've barely rested, and you're eager to work. You'll go far.”

Li Yu's expression remained neutral. “I'll work hard.”

Jian Suiying patted his shoulder. “Good. Come on. First I'll get you properly outfitted.”

Li Yu looked at him in surprise.

“You can't go walking around beside me dressed like that, can you?”

“I was going to buy some clothes after work today.”

“Come on. I'm not busy right now anyway. There's no point leaving until after work; something we can sort out now. Dressing appropriately is part of your job too.”

Li Yu still looked hesitant. Jian Suiying took the opportunity to throw an arm round his shoulders, grinning.

“What, do I have to beg you to come shopping with me?”

Li Yu followed him out helplessly.

Young Master Jian was rather flashy and loved looking good. He was full of confidence in his appearance and regularly discussed clothes and styling with professionals. He never treated himself poorly, and he certainly wasn't about to let the beautiful young man he adored go without either.

As he drove, he called a stylist and asked him to meet them at the shopping centre. After ending the call, he discreetly sent another message while waiting at a red light, warning the man not to mistake Li Yu for his latest lover. Although Young Master Jian confidently believed nobody could resist his charms…

The stylist had acted as Young Master Jian's personal shopping guide several times before. Knowing the shops well, he led them around the centre.

Jian Suiying had been busy with work recently, and with his ankle injury beforehand, he hadn't been shopping in ages. He treated it as a chance to relax and browsed the clothes at his leisure. Li Yu, by contrast, looked thoroughly uninterested. He was fairly cooperative at first, but after two hours he could no longer conceal his impatience.

By then, all three were carrying quite a few bags. Jian Suiying hadn't bought much for himself, but everything he saw seemed to suit Li Yu.

To be fair, when someone had a good figure and a handsome face, just about anything looked good on them. Whenever Jian Suiying spotted something nice, he held it up to Li Yu to see how it looked.

Li Yu's expression had gone black with annoyance, but Jian Suiying and the stylist were still happily discussing outfits. Finally, both men were satisfied, and Li Yu's afternoon of torment came to an end.

Jian Suiying cheerfully loaded a boot full of shopping into the car and took Li Yu out for dinner.

Li Yu was wearing a neat little suit made from excellent fabric, carefully cut to show off his striking figure and make him look even more attractive. Sitting in the same car, scarcely twenty centimetres apart, Young Master Jian learnt the true meaning of having his mind wander to all sorts of improper thoughts.

At this point, he liked Li Yu however he looked at him. There were plenty of handsome men in the world, but none combined Li Yu's looks, figure, bearing, family background and intelligence. Anyone with ambition would want to claim such a prize for themselves, if only for the satisfaction of possessing something so exceptional.

Jian Suiying was happily indulging in his fantasies when Li Yu suddenly asked, “How much did you spend today?”

“Huh?”

“On all my things.”

“Not entirely sure.”

“I'll go through the accounts with Sister Liang tomorrow and transfer you the money as soon as possible.”

Jian Suiying used the indulgent tone of someone spoiling a child. “Why are you being so polite with me? Just keep them.”

Li Yu turned towards him. His expression was somewhat cold, and he looked straight at Jian Suiying as he asked slowly, “If I'm buying things, why should you be paying for them?”

The question caught Jian Suiying off guard.

His head cleared at once. He abruptly realised that he and Li Yu were still only casual acquaintances. What sort of message was he sending by suddenly spending more than 100,000 yuan on him? When he thought about it carefully, it really was far too intimate a gesture. He shot Li Yu a glance and, sure enough, the boy's expression wasn't right.

Jian Suiying hurriedly pretended nothing was amiss. “Well, look at me! I don't stint on my employees, do I? I just wanted to reward you in advance. Working for me means running all over the place and being terribly busy. You'll see what I mean soon enough.”

Li Yu's tone softened slightly. “Thank you, President Jian. But you really shouldn't have to pay for my clothes. I appreciate the thought.”

That respectful form of address, used twice, struck Jian Suiying straight in the heart. Don't do this to me, he thought. It had taken such effort to reach the point where Li Yu smiled whenever he saw him and called him ‘Brother Jian’ so affectionately. How had they gone back to ‘President Jian’ and formal politeness after just half a day?

After spending more time with Li Yu, Jian Suiying had begun to get a reasonable grasp of his character.

He sensed that Li Yu was deeply proud and rather cold by nature. He wasn't an easy person to get along with, and certainly not someone who warmed readily to others. You could treat a person like that well for years without ever truly earning their affection. But offend them, even just once, and they might bear a grudge forever.

Jian Suiying analysed the situation privately and concluded that it was probably related to Li Yu's family background.

Li Yu's grandfather had weathered tremendous upheaval. Unlike Jian Suiying's own grandfather, who had come through literal gunfire and battle, Old Mr Li had been unavoidably caught up in several political struggles. Someone who had lived through such dramatic reversals of fortune was bound to become extraordinarily cautious. In fact, the reason Li Yu's grandfather wasn't close to Jian Suiying's grandfather, or indeed many people, was that he'd suffered too much persecution in the past. Although he'd eventually been rehabilitated, he'd continued to keep his head down and protect himself. Only in recent years, with a more open climate, a changed political situation and capable younger generations in the Li family, had they begun rebuilding their network of connections.

A child raised in that sort of family would surely find it difficult to become close to people, while remembering particularly well anything that harmed his interests.

The more Jian Suiying thought about it, the more sensible his explanation seemed. That only made him more worried about offending Li Yu. He hurried to set the matter straight, coming up with a number of harmless explanations to show he wasn't trying to give him things for free. It had simply been convenient to pay with his own card first.

Li Yu's expression didn't improve until they reached the restaurant.

Over dinner, Jian Suiying became even more attentive, serving him food and pouring his tea. After this happened several times, Li Yu grew embarrassed. Jian Suiying was older than him and now his superior as well. Being fussed over like this felt awkward.

“President Jian, I can manage myself.”

“Oi, what's that you're calling me? What did we say just now? Once we're off work, you still have to call me Brother. No getting lazy.”

“Brother Jian, I can manage. I can reach it.”

Seeing that Li Yu really wasn't upset any more, Jian Suiying finally relaxed.

“All right. I just wanted to tell you this chilled garland chrysanthemum is delicious. I don't usually like sweet food, but the sauce here is sweet and spicy. I've no idea how they make it. It's just really good.”

“All right. I'll help myself.”

Jian Suiying smiled as he watched Li Yu put a mouthful of food between his lips. The Sichuan dishes had turned his lips bright red from the spice, making his skin look even fairer and more delicate. Jian Suiying felt he could look at him forever without growing tired of the sight.

How could something he hadn't even got his hands on yet be so irresistibly enticing?

Sure enough, within a couple of days Li Yu transferred the money to him, as though it were burning a hole in his account.

Here he was, practically falling over himself to please someone, and the other person didn't even appreciate it. Jian Suiying couldn't help feeling a little defeated.

But he soon had no time to think about Li Yu. One of his projects had suddenly run into trouble, and he was worried sick over it. He was sitting with his eyes closed, trying to work out what to do, when his phone rang.

The caller ID showed the family home, so he answered. Jian Suilin's voice came down the line.

He'd noticed the brat was getting clever. Whenever he wanted to reach him, he called from the house phone. If he used his own mobile, Jian Suiying ignored seven or eight out of ten calls.

It wasn't that Jian Suiying deliberately behaved so childishly. The problem was that at some point, Jian Suilin had gone from avoiding him every day to finding every possible excuse to stay close to him. It had started gradually around the time Suilin entered secondary school. There'd been a period when the boy had irritated him beyond belief.

But calls from the family landline were impossible to guard against.

“Brother, it's me.”

“Mm. Talk.” Jian Suiying had only just finished losing his temper, and his tone was particularly unpleasant.

“Li Yu's started working at your company too?”

“Yeah.”

There was a pause at the other end. “Brother, could I start tomorrow as well—”

“No.” Jian Suiying cut him off. “The thought of you coming already gives me enough of a headache. Do what Dad said and go and enjoy yourself for two weeks before you start. Let me have two weeks of peace.”

“Brother, I won't cause you any trouble.”

Jian Suiying was growing impatient. “No.”

Jian Suilin's voice became a little agitated. “Li Yu's only just graduated too. I can do anything he can. Brother, let me—”

Jian Suiying hung up on him.

Usually, once Jian Suiying ended a call like that, there was no room for discussion. If Jian Suilin kept pushing his luck, he'd only get punished for it.

Sure enough, the phone didn't ring again. Jian Suiying was already in an exceptionally foul mood. If Jian Suilin dared call again now, he'd be asking for a beating.

Jian Suiying had thrown a huge tantrum in the office that day, leaving the whole company under a dark cloud. Apart from Li Yu, practically nobody dared speak to him.

For the past couple of days, he'd spent most of his time ringing people and trying to pull strings.

Ever since retiring, his grandfather had spent his days raising chickens and growing vegetables, leading a secluded, idyllic life. Jian Suiying hadn't wanted to disturb the old man. For one thing, asking his grandfather to trade on his reputation to solve a problem was risky; the old man was so stubbornly independent that he might not agree. For another, even if he agreed, Jian Suiying would certainly get a long lecture afterwards. The very thought made him shudder.

After thinking it over, Jian Suiying decided to try inviting the person responsible out for a meal first. If he still hadn't solved the problem by the end of the month, he'd have no choice but to beg his grandfather for help. Having made up his mind, he rang a friend and asked him to arrange a meeting.

Shortly before midday, the friend finally called back with good news. He'd managed to arrange it, and they could all have dinner together that evening.

Seeing that there was finally some hope, Jian Suiying perked up. He immediately rang Li Yu.

“Li Yu, get the car ready at once.”

Jian Suiying hadn't slept well for the past couple of nights because of this problem. He lay back across a seat in the rear of the company vehicle and closed his eyes for a while. Perhaps the air conditioning was turned up too high; he hadn't been asleep long before the cold woke him, and he spent the rest of the journey sneezing.

Li Yu frowned at him. “Have you caught a cold?”

“Fuck, I've got a chill. And I've got to go to dinner with people tonight.” His irritation built as one thing after another went wrong. “For fuck's sake, Little Zhao, why have you got the air conditioning so high? Don't you know anything about reducing carbon emissions?”

He took his temper straight out on the driver.

The poor young driver didn't dare say a word. Now he understood why the other two, more experienced drivers had both refused to take the job today and insisted that he go instead.

Li Yu handed Jian Suiying a roll of tissues and opened the windows on both sides.

“Stop at a petrol station in a bit and buy some medicine. Take it now, and you should be able to get through the evening.”

Jian Suiying blew his nose and muttered, “It's fine. I'll be better after a sleep. Have you found the information on that man? Let me see.”

Li Yu handed over the laptop resting on his knees. Jian Suiying read through the information with reddened eyes. If he knew where someone came from and where they'd worked, he could usually find a connection somewhere in the dense web of relationships. Once he'd established that connection, half the problem was solved. Plenty of people failed to get things done not because they lacked money, but because they had no idea whom to give it to.

Li Yu looked at his exhausted face with some surprise. Ever since he'd met Jian Suiying, the man had always seemed like a swaggering, devil-may-care troublemaker. This was the first time Li Yu had seen him concentrating on work, scarcely reacting to anything around him. It was a novelty.

When Jian Suiying finished reading, he muttered a quiet, “Fuck.”

Li Yu asked, “What's wrong?”

Jian Suiying's heart quivered. “He's from Yunnan. If they don't drink me to death tonight, it'll be a miracle…”

He'd once worked on a project in Yunnan, getting the assessments and approvals sorted so that only construction remained. Then he'd decided he didn't want to continue and sold it on. A major reason was that those bloody Yunnan people could drink so much. He'd begun to think he'd end up paralysed before his time if he stayed there any longer. They'd genuinely frightened him off drinking.

Li Yu teased, “I thought you liked alcohol.”

“Alcohol's supposed to liven things up. A couple of drinks make eating and chatting more enjoyable. But getting completely plastered is pure suffering.” Jian Suiying leant wearily against the seat, closed his eyes and asked, “Have you booked the hotel? We probably won't make it back tonight.”

“I'll book it now.”

“Forget it. Don't book anything yet. We'll see where we eat and find somewhere nearby afterwards.”

“All right.”

Jian Suiying managed a faint smile. “Little Li, tonight you're going to have to take a few drinks for me whether you can handle them or not. I need to keep my head clear. If I don't sort this out, I'll lose a fortune.”

Li Yu said nothing, merely letting out a small sigh.

“This is part of your job too. Did you think earning money was easy?”

Li Yu shook his head. “No, it isn't.”

“Mm, good. When you're running your own affairs in future, don't assume people will automatically do you favours just because you've got an influential father. They see you're young, and they're all smiles to your face, but behind your back they don't take you seriously at all. They give you the runaround whenever you try to get anything done. You'll find out for yourself one day…”

Perhaps all the sneezing had left Jian Suiying light-headed, because he went on to give Li Yu an absent-minded lesson. In truth, he was talking about his own experiences of going into business in his early twenties. Back then, he'd believed his family background made him untouchable. Surely everybody would show him respect, and he'd make enormous profits without any trouble? In reality, he'd had to struggle his way through, enduring plenty of setbacks and hardship. He really had built his present success with his own sweat and hard work.

At first, Li Yu listened only half-heartedly. Gradually, however, he turned towards the back seat and looked at Jian Suiying, who was speaking slowly with his eyes closed. His gaze became increasingly attentive.

There were six people at the dinner in all. Most of them had come to support Jian Suiying and speak on his behalf. During the meal, Jian Suiying forced himself to remain lively and talked at length with the man responsible for the case. Before they were even halfway through dinner, the two were addressing each other like brothers, and the alcohol was going down as though it were water.

Even so, Jian Suiying wasn't reassured. Anyone could exchange pretty words over dinner. Whether the man would actually do anything afterwards was another matter. He'd still have to keep pushing the matter forward. When the meal ended, Jian Suiying barely managed to see the guests off before he could endure no more. He braced himself against the table and began vomiting, frightening even the waiters.

Li Yu looked at his bloodless face and hair soaked with sweat. Although the smell was enough to make him sick, he wrinkled his nose and went over to help Jian Suiying up.

Jian Suiying's vision was swimming, and his legs were weak. With a cold on top of so much alcohol, he felt indescribably dreadful. He wished he could simply pass out on the spot. Unfortunately, his constitution was too strong to grant him even that small mercy.

Li Yu pulled over a napkin and wiped his mouth, then asked the staff to book two rooms at the hotel. Half-dragging, half-supporting him, he managed to get Jian Suiying into one of them.

Jian Suiying collapsed onto the bed and didn't move, apart from groaning with discomfort.

Li Yu sighed, hauled him off the bed and helped him into the bathroom. He poured a glass of water and told him to rinse his mouth.

Jian Suiying shook his head without speaking.

“Brother Jian, rinse your mouth. Come on.”

Jian Suiying's voice was hoarse. “Let me… sleep for a bit…”

Growing impatient, Li Yu pressed the rim of the glass to his lips and forced some water into his mouth. Jian Suiying choked and began coughing, fine beads of sweat appearing at his temples.

Once he'd rinsed his mouth, Li Yu helped him back to bed. Then, with some difficulty, he stripped off the clothes and trousers that had been splattered with vomit. Li Yu had covered several rounds of drinks for Jian Suiying tonight, and they'd been travelling for hours. He was exhausted himself and honestly didn't want to have to look after him. After all, seeing a man like Jian Suiying suffer such an embarrassing misfortune was usually rather satisfying.

Unfortunately, Li Yu hadn't forgotten that he was now Jian Suiying's assistant. Leaving his boss in that state would be difficult to justify the following morning.

Luckily, this wasn't like last time. Jian Suiying had no strength left to cause trouble, and Li Yu managed to remove his outer clothes and trousers without difficulty.

Even so, he couldn't help looking a few times afterwards. Jian Suiying was so unwell that cold sweat covered his body and had even dampened his underwear. Everything was clearly visible in the hotel's dim yellow light. Together with the vulnerable, half-conscious way he lay there, it made him look… altogether too different from usual.

Li Yu's entire body went rigid, as though he'd suddenly put himself on the defensive.

His expression stiffened. He snatched up the duvet, threw it over Jian Suiying and turned to leave.

“Li Yu…” Jian Suiying called hazily.

Li Yu looked back. Jian Suiying had turned his head towards him and was watching through eyes barely open.

“Water… get me some water…”

Li Yu hesitated, then fetched a bottle of mineral water from the fridge. He helped Jian Suiying sit up and held the bottle to his lips.

“Drink.”

Jian Suiying gulped down a couple of mouthfuls, then pushed the bottle away. “Go and buy me something for the hangover.”

Young Master Jian was so used to ordering people about that, although he restrained himself somewhat around Li Yu when sober, he had no inhibitions at all in this state.

It was the middle of the night. Who would feel like going out to buy him medicine? Li Yu decided he'd simply leave him in bed and be done with it. Judging by Jian Suiying's condition, he wouldn't remember anything tomorrow anyway. He pushed him aside and made to leave.

But Jian Suiying's body slumped sideways, and his head rested limply against Li Yu.

Li Yu started in alarm.

He sprang to his feet and hurried out of the room.

The instant the door slammed shut, Jian Suiying opened his eyes slightly and gave a smug little smile.

He slept for a full fourteen hours, so deeply that he lost all sense of time. When Young Master Jian finally woke, his head was still heavy, and his legs felt unsteady, but he was much better than the previous day. He quickly showered, cleaned himself thoroughly, took some cold medicine, and finally rang Li Yu.

“Hello, Little Li. Where are you?”

“In my room.”

“I've had enough sleep. Come over.”

Before long, there was a knock at the door. Young Master Jian hadn't expected Li Yu so quickly. In a flurry, he stripped off his dressing gown, tossed it into the bathroom and put on a pair of the hotel's ridiculous disposable paper underpants before going to answer. In the entrance hall, he even paused to admire himself in the full-length mirror a few times. Satisfied with his appearance, he opened the door.

Li Yu stood outside, expressionless. Beside him was Little Zhao, their driver, wearing his usual rather foolish expression.

Jian Suiying thought about how he was dressed. Even with his thick skin, he felt a little embarrassed. Irritation rose in him.

“I told you to come. Why did you bring Little Zhao?”

“I thought you'd want to head back now you're awake.”

“Who said I wanted to head back? Little Zhao, go and wait in your room.”

The young driver had been admiring his boss's eight-pack and long legs enviously. Hearing the displeasure in his voice, he hurried away.

Jian Suiying turned to Li Yu. “Come in. I've got a few things to tell you.”

Li Yu followed him into the room.

Young Master Jian leant against the headboard, his long legs crossed. He lit a cigarette before speaking in a leisurely tone.

“And you talk about going back? Look at me. Can I wear these clothes? Am I supposed to go home stark naked?”

Li Yu thought, Even if you had to walk home naked, you wouldn't blush.

He asked, “Shall I go and buy you some clothes?”

“Mm, get me an outfit. My head still hurts, and my throat's sore too. Go and see what medicine you can find… Do you know my measurements?”

Having said it, Jian Suiying realised the question sounded a little suggestive. He gave Li Yu a teasing look.

Li Yu felt he'd finally seen through him. Unless Jian Suiying was ill or had suffered some misfortune, he couldn't go a single day without showing off. And if you responded to his teasing by looking embarrassed, he'd only enjoy it more.

So Li Yu merely gave a faint smile and swept his gaze casually over him.

“I can make a reasonable guess.”

That fleeting, indifferent glance seemed devastatingly alluring to Jian Suiying. He stared for two whole seconds before collecting himself.

Disappointed that his teasing hadn't worked, he said curtly, “Then get on with it. Oh, and have the hotel send me breakfast.”

Ever since Li Yu had become his assistant, Jian Suiying insisted on sending him to do things he could easily have managed with a flick of his own hand. He took immense pleasure in every little thing Li Yu did for him.

Jian Suiying finished his breakfast in the room. Li Yu returned with the clothes and medicine, and the outfit proved to be a good fit. Jian Suiying took the medicine, dressed and led Li Yu out.

Once they were in the car, Little Zhao asked, “President Jian, where are we going?”

Jian Suiying gave him an address, then smiled at Li Yu.

“We're going to see my old grandad.”

On the way, he bought a pile of health tonics and supplements, and they set off in grand style for the place where his grandfather lived.

These days, the old man lived an unhurried, carefree life.

When they arrived, Little Zhao stayed in the car while Jian Suiying and Li Yu got out carrying the gifts.

Although the old man's hair was already half grey, he was remarkably vigorous. He stood by the door with a pipe between his teeth and broke into a smile when he saw them climb out of the car.

“Grandad!” Jian Suiying called happily.

“So you little rascal have finally found time to visit me!” Old Mr Jian gave him a hearty slap on the back.

Jian Suiying hissed in pain. “Grandad, with strength like that, you're guaranteed to live to a hundred and twenty.”

His grandfather laughed and scolded him. “What would I want to live that long for? I'd only be wasting the country's food. Come on, inside. Oh, who's this young man?”

“Grandad, this is Old Mr Li's grandson.”

“Eh? Old Li's grandson? He's grown that much?”

“Hasn't he just.”

“Well, well.” The old man looked Li Yu up and down. “I saw you when you were little, you know. You won't remember me, though. What was your name again, lad?”

Li Yu answered respectfully, “My name is Li Yu.”

“That's it, that's the name. Your grandfather's always showing off his learning. Gave you a girl's name, and when we laughed at him for it, he had a whole argument ready about why it was perfectly sensible! Ha ha ha!”

Li Yu laughed along with him.

“Come on, let's go inside.”

As they walked, Jian Suiying said, “Grandad, I came in a hurry, so I bought you a few things locally.”

Old Mr Jian glanced at the cordyceps, sea cucumbers, bird's nests and other expensive supplements. He looked thoroughly disdainful.

“Take them back. I don't want any of that rubbish. I'm telling you, the more of those things you eat, the faster you'll die. If you want to live a long time, do what I do: eat vegetables you've grown yourself, without pollution or pesticides, every single day.”

Jian Suiying smiled awkwardly. “Yes, yes, you're right about everything. But I've come all this way. Surely you can accept them? Otherwise, give them to the people working here.”

A middle-aged man and woman came out to greet them. Calling, “Young Master, you're here!” they took the gifts from their hands.

The old man had four people looking after him at home. During particularly busy periods, such as planting and harvesting, he hired extra help. He was certainly never lonely.

It took a full two or three minutes to walk from the gate to the house.

Li Yu looked at the vegetable plots stretching away in every direction, apparently finding it all rather novel.

Jian Suiying pointed things out as they went, smiling. “That's a plum tree. They're not in season yet, but they'll be delicious in another month. And those pumpkins are excellent. They don't grow very big, but they're incredibly sweet.”

The old man chuckled. “I'm going to have a chicken slaughtered and stewed today. It's still a while until dinner, so I'll go and pick some good vegetables. Why don't you two go and catch a couple of fish in the lake out back?”

Jian Suiying brightened. “Great! Is the boat ready?”

“Knew you were coming, so I had it prepared. Old Yang's waiting for you out back. I'll give you two hours. If the fish you bring back don't weigh at least four jin, the two of you will be washing the dishes tonight.”

Jian Suiying burst out laughing. “Grandad, you're underestimating me. Just you wait.”

He took the snacks and water a housekeeper had prepared for them and eagerly led Li Yu towards the lake. Whenever he visited his grandfather, he always took a boat out fishing. The scenery was beautiful, the air fresh, and there were hardly any people about. He loved taking a little food and drink, mooring the boat in the middle of the lake, fishing, reading a novel and spending the afternoon lazing about without a thought in his head. And now he'd have the pleasure of taking the lovely Li Yu along. The very idea delighted Young Master Jian.

Sure enough, when they reached the lakeside, a white speedboat was already waiting at a small wooden jetty.

Li Yu gazed at the endless greenery and sparkling lake. He felt an immediate sense of freedom, as though his chest had opened up. He drew a deep breath of fresh air and felt invigorated.

From some distance away, Jian Suiying shouted, “Uncle Yang!”

“Young Master, you're here! The boat's all ready, and your fishing tackle's on board.”

“Thanks, Uncle Yang.”

Jian Suiying and Li Yu boarded the boat. Jian Suiying started the engine with practised ease and steered towards the centre of the lake.

“Little Li, do you know how to fish?” Jian Suiying asked casually as he baited a hook.

“I haven't done much of it.”

Jian Suiying handed him the baited rod. “Here. Sit beside me.”

They sat down in their chairs, and Jian Suiying passed him a can of beer.

“Here you go. Nice and cold.”

Li Yu looked at him with a frown. “You felt terrible after drinking too much yesterday, and you're drinking again?”

“This little bit? I drink it like it's a soft drink.”

Li Yu shook his head, took the can and set it aside.

Jian Suiying propped up his rod, took a deeply satisfying mouthful of cold beer and let out a contented sigh.

“What lovely weather. When I was little, I used to spend part of every winter and summer holiday here. Fishing was my favourite thing to do back then.”

He leant back in his chair, narrowed his eyes and admired the natural scenery.

Sunlight scattered across the lake. A gentle breeze stirred the water into ripples of gold, while grass and flowers swayed in the wind. The stillness and beauty of it all filled Li Yu with tranquillity too. Without realising it, he closed his eyes. He wasn't sure how much time had passed, but just as he began to grow drowsy, Jian Suiying suddenly shouted beside him.

“Oi! You've got a bite!”

Something slammed into Li Yu, nearly knocking him from his chair. He steadied himself instinctively and opened his eyes in surprise. Jian Suiying had already lunged to his side and was excitedly reeling in the line, scolding him at the same time.

“Were you asleep? Couldn't you keep an eye on it? It's pulling that hard, so it must be a big one!”

Li Yu helped him reel the fish in.

A fat grass carp more than a foot long came up, writhing on the line. Jian Suiying laughed delightedly.

“Knew it'd be a decent size! That's dinner sorted.”

Li Yu laughed too and made a rare joke. “Does that mean we won't have to wash the dishes?”

“This one probably isn't four jin. No, we'll have to catch another couple.” As he spoke, Jian Suiying reached for the slippery fish.

It was big and full of energy, thrashing about furiously. Jian Suiying couldn't keep hold of it. The fish slipped from his hands with a loud flapping sound, and before he could catch it, it bounced straight against the front of Li Yu's shirt. It slid down his shirt and suit trousers all the way to his feet. Li Yu couldn't dodge in time. His clothes were left thoroughly wet, and he stared at them in dismay.

Jian Suiying laughed. “I've got some sportswear in the cabin. Want to change into that?”

His wet clothes felt uncomfortable, so Li Yu considered it. “Yes, I'd better. Where is it?”

“I'll find it for you.”

Jian Suiying went into the cabin, fetched the clothes and held them out. Just as Li Yu reached to take them, Jian Suiying made a little noise and drew them back.

Li Yu's hand stopped in mid-air. He looked at him questioningly.

Jian Suiying gave a wicked grin. “Little Li, can you swim?”

Li Yu took a step backwards. “Brother Jian…”

Jian Suiying laughed. “It's so hot. Want to jump in and swim a couple of lengths?”

“No, thanks.” Li Yu looked at him warily. Jian Suiying was so unpredictable that Li Yu was genuinely worried he might pounce on him and shove him into the lake.

Jian Suiying looked disappointed. “You're only eighteen or nineteen. Can't you be a bit more lively? Or is it that the suit doesn't suit you? I remember thinking you seemed quite sunny and outgoing when we first met.”

Li Yu gave an awkward little smile, unsure how to answer.

Jian Suiying handed him the clothes. “Go on, get changed.”

Li Yu entered the cabin and began taking off his clothes and trousers. Jian Suiying simply leant against the doorway and watched with considerable enjoyment.

Li Yu glanced at him in embarrassment. Then he glanced again, and again. Young Master Jian showed absolutely no intention of looking away. Li Yu couldn't very well stop changing now without appearing unduly self-conscious.

Young Master Jian was being shameless again. Not content with staring, he began offering his opinions.

“Well, well. Little Li, you've got a great figure. How do you train?”

“I exercise,” Li Yu replied stiffly.

“I've only ever seen you playing basketball or football. You're so busy, you can't have time for that very often. You can't have built yourself up like this with a bit of exercise now and then. Do you go to the gym?” Jian Suiying's gaze roamed openly over him.

Li Yu felt uncomfortable all over under that stare.

Jian Suiying raised an eyebrow and asked casually, “What do you practise, then?” He knew lots of young people took up some sort of activity in their spare time.

Li Yu bared his white teeth in a chilling smile. “Boxing.”

Jian Suiying gave a little shiver. He idly touched Li Yu's collar a couple of times, then quickly withdrew his hand and laughed awkwardly.

“Not bad. I wouldn't have guessed.” He rubbed his nose. “I used to learn taekwondo myself.”

Li Yu tugged the hem of his shirt firmly into place and straightened his collar in the mirror. “Let's fish.”

Jian Suiying reluctantly dragged his eyes away. He was about to say something when his phone rang.

It was his grandfather.

“Hello?”

“Suiying, how's it going? Getting ready to wash those dishes?”

“Ha! Not a chance. Just wait until I get back.”

“Make it quick. The chicken's already stewing.”

“All right. We'll be back soon.”

Li Yu had already returned to his chair and was staring attentively at the lake.

Jian Suiying sat down beside him and affectionately smoothed the hair that had been mussed when he changed clothes. Lowering his voice, he said, “Honestly, you look brighter and more cheerful in sportswear.”

Li Yu tilted his head almost imperceptibly to avoid the touch, casting Jian Suiying a cool glance with those clear, water-like eyes.

Jian Suiying's heart suddenly began to race. More than race—it felt as though it might burst straight out of his chest. Here, in such a peaceful, beautiful place with nobody else around, the atmosphere was growing more intimate by the moment. It seemed the perfect opportunity for something to happen between them.

But Jian Suiying was wary of going too far with Li Yu. After all, this was a young master of the Li family, not some pretty boy he could tease and toy with however he pleased.

He was never particularly patient about pursuing someone. Usually, he simply threw money at the problem. But Li Yu was obviously not someone that approach would work on. The thought of spending day after day with the lovely Li Yu while finding it difficult even to touch him made Jian Suiying restless with longing. His desire for the young man left him both frustrated and helpless. He felt he needed an opportunity, yet he had no idea what that opportunity might be or when it would come.
