Dare You To Death: Solve the Mystery, See the Death.
Investigation Part 7
Khamin and Jade return to the police station, but this time he must go to the forensic department to obtain test results for any drugs or chemicals found at the scene, as well as fingerprints from those present.
"Where are you going in such a hurry?" Jade walked with his arms crossed, looking at the back of the person in front of him, who was accelerating so fast that he was almost running.
“The sooner we investigate everything, the sooner we can find the culprit.”
"Yes, yes." Jade pretended to pick his ears and rolled his eyes in annoyance. That attitude, as if he was carrying the weight of the world and thinking he was the only one handling this case, was really annoying.
The two of them arrived at the forensic department, but before they could even get inside, they heard a loud noise.
“Did you spill water on the report, Manmai?!”
"I...sorry, Miss Mirin. I'm really sorry. Mai will hurry and wipe it for you." Khamin opened the door and went inside to find two girls in gowns arguing. One had jet-black hair that fell to the middle of her back, her face adorned with makeup to make her look sharp and beautiful. The other was holding a piece of paper and trying to use it to dry her oil. She had a cute, adorable face, her large, round eyes looking pitiful and pleading with the person in front of her.
“Oh, no need to. Put that in the shredder and get the documents from my room.”
“Miss Mirin, did you make two sets?”
“With a clumsy subordinate like you, I have to prepare everything.” The person called Mirin lightly tapped the head with a pencil.
“Miss Mirin is really amazing. Then, I’d better go get the documents first.”
"Hello," Khamin called out to both girls, making them turn to look at him. "I'm Inspector Khamin."
"New Inspector!" Manmai said excitedly even before she reached the door.
"Hello, Inspector. My name is Mirin. I'm the head of the forensic science department here. This lady's name is Manmai. She's my assistant. The others, let's go out to eat."
“Nice to meet you. I’m here to discuss the investigation of the case at the university.”
“Wait a moment,” she said to Khamin before turning to look at her assistant, who was looking at the new inspector with a dreamy gaze. “Can I get the documents?”
"Ah... oh, okay." Manmai turned to smile at Khamin again before walking into the department's staff room.
“Please have a seat, Inspector. Would you like some coffee?”
"Good."
"Where are you?" She turned to ask Jade, who was yawning behind her.
“Same as before.” Because they have worked together for a long time, they are so close that they know each other’s personalities, so they don’t need to call each other by their names anymore.
"Then wait a moment." Mirin walked to the kitchen to make coffee, leaving Khamin and Jade to sit in the reception area, saying nothing to each other. Until Manmai came back, she handed Khamin a document in a brown envelope, her face slightly red.
"Thank you"
"The sergeant looks younger than I thought. I thought he would be older and more arrogant."
“Repress it or what?”
"That's right, Captain. When the previous lieutenant was here, our department was practically deserted," Manmai said with relish before glancing at Khamin, who was reading documents intently. She hadn't seen someone of such high rank working so earnestly in a long time.
"Captain, is the conclusion that the case of those eight children was really a murder case?"
“How do you know?”
"The results are as follows: Who would be so crazy as to mix drugs into their friends' alcohol?"
"Here's a summary."
“Let's wait for Miss Mirin to tell us more. Otherwise, Mai will get nagged until her ears ring again."
“I heard that.” The person being spoken of walked back with two cups of coffee. She placed one on the table for Khamin and Jade before sitting down.
“The drug found in the glasses and bottles of liquor was Midazolam. It was likely mixed with liquor or a mixer and then poured into each person's glass. Regarding fingerprints, from the examination of the location and the evidence collection unit, there were no fingerprints of anyone else except the eight children.”
"We just went to the forensic department. The doctor there said that the victim had three drugs in his system. They're commonly used drugs, but when they're injected together, it's a good way to get executed," Jade said before showing the documents from the forensic department to the person opposite.
"If it's these three drugs, they're specific drugs. Where would the people who made them get them?"
"Then where will the criminal get Midazolam?"
"It's so easy to find and buy. It's sold everywhere online. It's a drug that's not illegal, but people don't use it illegally.
"What should we do next, Captain? This is clearly a mystery case," Manmai asked with a worried expression. She had only been working here for a year and had never even worked a serious murder case before.
“I’ll have to check the remaining evidence first. If you find out anything else, let me know.”
“Okay,” Khamin said goodbye to the two girls and walked back towards his room. It took him a while to piece together the story, but one thing was for sure: this was definitely a murder case.
Khamin carried two documents into the room, but before the door could close, someone else squeezed in.
“Why did you come in?”
"Working," Jade replied before sitting down on the sofa and putting his feet up on the coffee table with ease.
“You seem close to those two forensic doctors.”
“We’ve been working together for a while now, and we’ve been criticised for the same thing.”
"Subject?"
“The attempted murder case was always closed.”
“Um, you can go back to your room.”
“Not going back.”
"I don't have time to argue with you, Mr Jade."
“Good, because I’m also tired of arguing with you,” Khamin said, walking over to his desk and ignoring the annoying gazes. “From those kids’ statements, some things are true, and some are inconsistent. We need to figure out who’s telling the lie and what it’s about.”
“Let’s start with your younger brother.” Khamin bent down to read Jay’s interrogation log again before looking up at Jade, who was looking at him. “Your younger brother said he had the kid named Tonkla call an ambulance. Tonkla himself said he was the one who called. The kid named Cherene also said Tonkla was the one who called.”
"Already?"
"But the emergency doctor who went to the scene yesterday confirmed that he received a call from a woman, not a man." Their sharp eyes met. Jade stood up, placed both hands on Khamin's desk, and picked up the document to read without asking. But Khamin himself had already grown accustomed to this rude behaviour.
“Then the person we should ask is the girl named Cherene. If that girl was the one who called, why would she lie?”
“Let’s finish gathering all this up, and then we can go. Those kids will have to stay home today, right?”
"Um"
"Then let's meet at 1:00 PM. If you're late, I won't wait for you."
“I’m asking you this: When you were working at your old job, did you have a friend or partner?”
"...do not have"
“Huh, I think so too. Wouldn’t it be nice to be friendly with others, my capable officer?”
"Finish asking and then leave." Jade looked at Khamin calmly before walking away from the table. But instead of opening the door and going out, he walked over and fell.
He lay down on the brown leather sofa instead. His large hand grabbed a magazine about weapons; he opened it, then closed it on his face, and he fell silent.
"Khun Jade, what are you doing?"
"When you go, wake up."
"If you want to sleep, go sleep in your room."
"Then who just said that if you're late, you won't wait? If you pretend to leave first and really don't wait, what should I do?" Jade lowered the book to his chin before looking at Khamin, who was sitting at his desk.
“Do you see me as two years old? Why do you have to tease me with all this nonsense?”
“What are you doing, two years old? You’re so young that even dogs can’t lick you.”
“Mr Jade!”
“If you want to handle the paperwork, go ahead and do it. Just pretend I’m not in the room.”
"Mr Jade, Mr Jade!" Jade lifted the book to cover his face again before going silent, not answering the person calling his name.
Khamin sighed again and again. He had never encountered anyone this noisy before. At most, they would appear at the beginning, but after working together for less than a day, those people would often disappear. He was used to it. But with this stubborn person in front of him, he couldn't even argue back, yet now he was still hanging around. It was truly annoying.
Smoke billowed from the now deserted community playground. Tar was inhaling a cigarette in frustration, still angry that Bell had blamed him. Fortunately, the police were still suspicious of Pui Fai's death, so they weren't suspicious of drugs. He was being nice, so he should just leave, even though he wasn't that different from them.
"Hello"
[What's up, Tar? Why didn't your group come to school today?]
Because the police arrived at the scene early this morning, no students had gone there yet, so it probably wouldn't be big news.
"I have a little problem. What's the matter with you?"
[Same place tonight? Brother Chai has something special for you to try.]
“Tonight?”
[Oh, it's not easy to find. Besides the great stuff I mentioned, my brother found a bunch of women today. He said he won the lottery.]
“Someone like him who won the lottery, claiming he made a lot of money selling drugs, is more believable.”
[Come on, what's the conclusion? Are you going or not? I'll tell my brother to find you some hot girls.] Tar used his tongue to push his cheeks as he thought. Since he was in a bad mood anyway, it wouldn't hurt to let off some steam.
"Oh, I'm going."
[Great job, buddy. See you at 8 pm.]
"Yes"
After hanging up with his friend, Tar started thinking about the fun he had that night. He threw his cigarette on the floor, stomped it on the ground, and got up to walk back to the house.
There was a clean, white townhouse with a motorcycle parked in front. Tar was about to walk into the house, but his eyes caught sight of a white envelope lying on the cushion. The envelope containing the message to him immediately made her slender eyebrows furrow.
"What the hell?" Tar picked it up and opened it without thinking. But when he finished reading the message, his face immediately turned pale.
TRUTH OR DARE
DARE
"What the hell is this?" Besides the paper, there were also pictures of Tar that he himself had no idea had been taken. But if these pictures were to get out, he would definitely end up in jail.
The first picture is of a club where Tar is dropping sleeping pills into the glass of a young woman who is getting up to go to the bathroom. The second picture shows him injecting a type of drug into his veins. The third picture is of him taking a woman into a motel while she is unconscious. The last picture is of him and his friends. His face is so cut up that it's hard to tell who he is.
Another black paper was taken out and quickly read. Tar was so nervous that his hands and temples were covered in sweat.
TRUTH
“Is it true, Tar, that you tried to drug a woman and then took her to a hotel while she was unconscious? Is it true that people like you are like dogs in heat who can’t control themselves? Is it true that you drugged Pui Fai and then tried to have sex with her when she didn’t consent? Is it true? Is it true? Is it true?
Dare
'Dead!!!"
Tar threw the paper in his hand and looked around in a paranoid way. No one knew about this except for his fellow drug users. But if he got caught, they would have to get caught, too. Why would he do this? Tar tried to regain his composure before grabbing everything in the envelope and the letter and running back into the house. He hurried into the bedroom before anyone else could call his best friend.
[What? I'm not in the mood to talk.]
"Champ! Are you kidding me?!"
[What the hell are you pretending to be, Tar? If you're hallucinating, go to sleep.]
"Is this damn letter a prank on me or something?"
[What is your letter?]
"W-what the hell is this Truth or Dare letter? Is that right? Are you guys kidding me?!"
[I'm already rambling. If you're going to call and annoy me, that's all.]
"Champ! Damn it, Champ! Wait a minute!" Tar threw his phone onto the bed in frustration. He looked back at all the letters before putting them back in the drawer and locking it.
He could only think that one of the group was teasing the others like this because it was a game they had just played the night before. It had to be them. Tar paced around the room, sitting and lying down in anxiety. Before he knew it, the sun had long since set. When he saw that nothing had happened, he relaxed and thought that it was just a silly prank. He decided to get up, take a shower, and get dressed to go out as planned.
“Where are you going, Tar? Isn’t this enough for you to cause trouble?”
“Don’t complain, Mom. I’ll be gone for just a moment.”
“If you don’t let me complain to you, then which dog should I complain to? Your friend just passed away. Why are you going out again?”
"A dead person is a dead person, right? Let's go." Tar grabbed a helmet and motorcycle keys from the house before riding out onto the road.
The road from home today seemed more deserted than usual. No cars were passing by. The street lights flickered on and off, making it difficult to see the road. On top of that, the air was colder than usual. Tar suddenly felt a chill run down his spine when he thought of the message in the letter.
He shook his head to shake off the crazy thought. But when he opened his eyes, he saw a car coming in the wrong lane. Its high beams were blindingly bright, almost causing him to make a mistake. Fortunately, Tar swerved to avoid the vehicle in time. He chose to pull over to the side of the road to rest and let the panic subside. The fear and anxiety were starting to haunt him more and more.
But a person who can't think is a person who can't think. When he regained his senses, Tar continued riding his motorcycle to the club, unaware that the letter that had been sent was demanding an answer from him: whether to choose to answer with the truth or to challenge the death that awaited him.
