Dare You To Death: Solve the Mystery, See the Death.
Investigation Part 6
They're arguing. Khamin rolled his eyes at the two siblings sitting across from him who were arguing about breakfast. He was almost done eating, but the two in front of him weren't done yet.
"You ate your own food, so why are you taking it from me?"
"I'll pay." Jade scooped a meatball from Jay's bowl into his mouth before raising an eyebrow at him in a relaxed manner.
"Brother, Brother Min, did you just become the new inspector here?" Jay muttered to his brother before losing interest and turning to talk to the person watching the cars drive by outside.
"Um"
"Will you take on this case?"
"Um"
"Do you think this is a murder case?" Khamin turned to look at the person sitting opposite him before sighing.
"You're still a suspect."
“My friend died, so I have to wonder what happened.” Jay's serious expression didn't soften Khamin's heart in the slightest.
"The inspector won't say anything because the case is still under investigation," Jade said, taking the last bite of rice before looking up at Khamin.
“Then can I come with you to the hospital? I won’t disturb you. I promise.”
“Ask your brother. I’ll wait in the car. Come back when you’re done.” Khamin placed the purple banknote on the table before walking away, leaving the two siblings staring at him with different gazes.
"Is he usually this stressed?"
"I don't know. I just started working with him. Hey, calculate the bill," Jade shouted to the owner of his usual noodle shop before taking the money Khamin had put in his pocket and using his own money to pay instead.
“Can I go to the hospital with you?”
"Why are you going? You can't go in with me anyway."
“I just... just want to know.”
"Jay, I'm asking you this. Do you really not know? Or are you just not telling us what's going on with our friends?" Jay turned to look at his brother, whose expression was more serious than ever.
"There are problems, but will it lead to killing each other?"
"Then let me ask you, who has the biggest problem with Fai? Tell me the truth," Jay thought for a while while waiting for his brother to pay the money for this meal to the uncle, the owner of the shop.
“Sigh, I don’t know what the other guys have problems with, but Tar and Fai had a problem in our second year.”
"Subject?"
“That day was during freshman orientation. We were second-year seniors who had to lead the activities. After the event, we had a party like this. But that time, we went to Tar's house for a party. There were about twenty of us.” Jay quickly combed his grey hair before continuing. “It was around 2 or 3 in the morning. Those who were okay started to go home one by one. Those who were drunk were in various areas. When Time and I were about to go home, we heard a scream and ran upstairs to take a look. I saw Tar harassing Fai on the bed.”
“So what do you guys do?”
"Let's help stop him, bro. I remember that at that time, Time and I didn't hold back at all. When everyone started to sober up, he said he was drunk and apologised to Fai. At first, it seemed like we were going to break up, but Champ asked us to stay."
“Champ, a cotton fan?”
"Um, after that incident where Champ went in to save Fai, the two of them became a couple." Jade listened quietly, but also took in all the information. When the two of them walked to the car, they saw that Khamin was talking on the phone.
“Yes, I'm going in.”
"Who?" Jade asked when he saw that Khamin had hung up.
“The forensic department called to say that the results of the liquid examination of the glasses and liquor bottles at the crime scene are complete.”
"What's that way?" Khamin glanced at the boy sitting behind him before driving out of the restaurant without saying anything. Jade understood, so he didn't say anything.
"Where do you want me to take your brother?"
“At home, I’ll show you the way.”
“Uncle Min.”
"How is it going?"
"If you have any further questions, please feel free to call me."
"Then why did the sergeant have to call and ask about Jay? Does he have your number or something?"
“It should be in my history. That number and contact information. Are you really a police officer?”
"Where are you turning, Mr Jade?"
“Right.” Khamin drove along the road before grabbing the vibrating phone in the glove compartment to answer it.
"Hello"
[Inspector Khamin, I heard you're working on a case of a kid who died at a university. It was just a bunch of kids drinking and partying. I didn't think it would take this long to solve the case.]
“It’s not even forty-eight hours yet. Commander, is that a long time?”
[Let me tell you, one of the kids' family members is a local big shot. You'd better close this case soon.]
"I have my own investigative process, so thanks for the advice. But I can handle it myself." Jade glanced at the person behind the wheel. Although his expression remained indifferent, the tone of his voice on the other end of the line made it clear that the other person was probably harbouring resentment.
[I think it's nothing more than an accident, so I'd better spend my time doing something else.]
“The commander called just for this matter, right? Because I’m working, it’s not convenient to talk.”
"Sergeant, you can hang up now. We're almost there," Jade said in a louder voice than usual before pointing to the village ahead.
"That's all for now, Commander." Khamin hung up the phone before carelessly tossing it back where it was.
“He’s in such a bad mood; I guess he didn’t say anything nice.”
"Um"
Jade s gave directions in a large village until they reached a modern white detached house. Inside the parking lot were two motorbikes and a luxury car. I guessed they belonged to the two siblings sitting together in the car right now.
"Then I'll be going first, P'Min. Thank you for the ride." Jay moved to the middle of the front seats before smiling at Khamin, causing his brother to push his head back in annoyance.
“You can go down now.”
After dropping off Jay, the pair headed to the hospital, where Pui Fai's body was taken. They had to go in to receive the autopsy results to determine the exact cause of death, and then return to the forensic department at the station to review the results of the various examinations. All the evidence would determine whether what had happened was an accident or a murder.
"Jay told me that the deceased and the kid named Tar had had problems before," Jade broke the silence in the car by engaging in conversation with a demeanour.
"About what?"
"Moleculation and attempted rape." Khamin immediately turned to look at the person beside him. With such a serious incident, he didn't think they could ever be friends again. Jade told Khamin in detail everything he had heard from his younger brother so that he could analyse the situation further.
“Even with such an incident, why are you still in the same group?”
"Jay said it was because a kid named Champ asked for it."
“Something like this can happen once; it can happen again.”
"We'll know when the autopsy results come out." The pair arrived at the hospital's forensic department at nine o'clock. Upon entering, they saw a forensic doctor wheeling a body covered with a white cloth into storage.
"Oh, so you're here already? Uh, give me a moment." The young man in the gown removed his hat, gloves, and mask before grabbing a file and walking over to Khamin and Jade. "It's not often that we get to do autopsies like this. Usually, people just die for seemingly nothing. The most recent one was a gruesome murder on the beach."
Jade nodded in understanding. The case had been a shocking one for the police and forensic doctors here. However, since it was a Special Investigation Unit case, the body hadn't been here long.
"Have you performed an autopsy on the deceased?"
"Yes, I'll explain it in sections. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please let me know. But first, let me introduce myself. My name is Yotsapol, but you can call me Puti. I'm a forensic pathologist here."
"My name is Khamin, and this is Captain Jade."
"Nice to meet you. It wouldn't be good to tell you here, so let's go to my office," Putti led the way to his own doctor's room, which wasn't nearby. Inside, many documents were scattered on the table and the floor.
"Sorry if it's a bit messy. I don't have many guests. Please have a seat. Would you like some coffee or water?"
“No problem. Mr Puti, could you please tell me the cause of death? I have something else to attend to.”
"Okay, then let's begin." Puthi swept the documents on the table to the floor before opening a brown folder instead. "I hope you haven't already recorded the case as an accident."
Khamin and Jade looked at each other before looking at the forensic doctor in front of them, who was putting both hands on the table and moving his glasses back and forth.
"Because this is... a murder case!"
"You don't have to act so much, Doctor. By the time you finish talking, the bad guy will probably have fled," Jade said before using his tongue to push into his cheek to vent his frustration.
"I don't want you to be stressed out. If you hear the cause of death, you'll be even more stressed out."
"Tell me, Mr Puti."
“The cause of death of the victim named Pui Fai was heart failure.”
“Was it an accident?” “And?” Putthi turned to look at Jade slightly before flinching when the other person's eyes kept pressing him. “If it's heart failure, then it's
"If it's normal, it's probably right. But look at this," the young doctor pointed down at the document that had various values on it. It was quite difficult to read, but one part that was clearly visible was the name of what appeared to be a type of medicine. "I took the blood from the deceased's body, tested it and found these three types of medicine. They are normally medicines used in medical settings, but only in the right amounts and under strict supervision. However, judging from what was found in the deceased's body, I don't think the person who injected it was given much thought."
“Injected?”
"Yes, I'll explain it one step at a time." Putthi flipped through a page, revealing a photo of his inner thigh with a faint red mark and a needle mark. "These three drugs are used to execute criminals convicted of serious crimes."
'Sodium Thiopental'
'Pancuronium Bromide'
'Potassium Chloride'
Khamin carefully scanned the names of the three medicines before looking up to listen to Puthi continue.
“Sodium Thiopental is a drug used to induce anaesthesia. Pancuronium Bromide is a muscle relaxant that stops the respiratory system. Potassium Chloride causes hyperkalemia. If used in higher doses than prescribed by your doctor, it can cause irregular heartbeats, leading to heart failure and death.”
“Are you going to inject them all at once?”
“Based on the test results, the injections were not performed simultaneously. If this were a true murder, the perpetrator might have wanted the victim to appear to be sleeping peacefully to avoid suspicion.”
“It's not about alcohol, is it?”
"No, the deceased's blood alcohol level did not exceed the limit."
“What time of death?”
“Around midnight, forty-five to one in the morning,” the time Jay had previously stated, saying he had fainted around one in the morning. “There were no other external wounds on the body, just the needle marks in the picture.”
“Inside?”
"I will perform an autopsy tomorrow."
“If you get any results, please let me know.”
“Yes.” Khamin held out the file with a serious expression. He had to hurry back to the station and see which of the three drugs was found in the glass and bottle from the crime scene.
"I'll drive myself," Jade said, walking in front of Khamin.
“I can drive.”
“Whether you drive or read, I don’t want to end up in the hospital because the sergeant read documents while driving and caused an accident.”
"Then do as you wish." Khamin handed the car keys to the person next to him, then walked and read the documents.
Just as they had walked out of the forensic department, an emergency bed was quickly rolled in. Khamin was pulled towards the thick chest, and his waist was tightly hugged.
"I'm sorry!" The nurse quickly apologised before pushing the bed with the patient on it over.
“I know you’re stressed about the case, but please be careful.”
"Let me go now."
“Not even a word of thanks.”
"Thank you"
"Please make your voice a little sweeter."
"If you don't let go, you'll have to walk back to the station, Mr Jade."
“Excuse me, but your car keys are with me.” Khamin rolled his eyes slightly, annoyed. Jade just chuckled under his breath before letting go of Khamin’s slender waist, which he could feel through the fabric, and grabbed his hand instead.
“Come on, so you don’t accidentally bump into anyone again.”
Khamin let the other party lead the way, while he returned to carefully reading the autopsy results. He must find out who did this and why this murder happened. Please don't make things any more complicated than they already are.
