Dare You To Death: Solve the Mystery, See the Death.
The case is open; welcome the new police inspector.
Inside the police station, people were bustling about, with officers receiving complaints and solving problems for those in distress, making this morning seem busier than usual. In addition to having to wait to welcome the new police lieutenant, there was also a brawl at the station.
"You're the one who took my stuff!!!"
“What the hell do you want? I told you I didn’t take it. Did you leave it somewhere when you got drunk?!”
"Damn the nation of dogs!!!"
"You're the one who's a bastard!" The yelling and cursing continued until an officer had to come in and stop them.
“You two, please calm down. If there’s anything, please notify the authorities so that we can mediate and proceed with the case.”
“Calm down! How can you calm down? I lost hundreds of thousands of baht!”
"Did you just leave it there yourself, you idiot?!" The plump man was about to turn around because he was so tired of arguing; he didn't notice that his once close friend was running to grab a pair of scissors and raising them as high as he could, hoping to take his life this time.
“Die, Mee-Ouch!!!” Before he could even slash out with the tip of the knife, he was kicked hard in the stomach, causing his body to bend. His hands and arms were so weak that he had to drop the scissors and kneel on the ground, clutching his stomach.
"Wouldn't it be better if we talked nicely?" A deep, soft voice caught everyone's attention, causing them to turn to look at him. The young man was tall and slender, with jet-black hair styled to reveal an oval face with a sharp jawline. His smooth, honey-colored skin matched his single, sharp brown eyes. His nose bridge was high and matched his full lips. He wore a white shirt and a jet-black suit, looking good from every angle.
"Are you going to stab me, you damn friend!? Don't stay here!" The plump man bent down and grabbed the scissors in anger, but he had to cry out in pain when his palm was stepped on with full force by the black sneakers.
A man about 188 centimetres tall, with beautiful tanned skin that matched his sharp eyes and pupils as black as the night. His sharp face wore a narrow, displeased frown. He had a paper coffee cup in his mouth. His messy hair, tight black shirt, and jacket showed that he didn't need to wear a uniform like everyone else.
“Captain!” The policeman who was standing there, at a loss, immediately saluted the newcomer.
The so-called captain of this station kicked the wrist of the person who was about to pick up the scissors, then, in frustration, kicked the sharp object away from the two perpetrators.
“I’m just going out to buy some coffee for a sec.”
"These two were arguing about a missing hundred thousand baht. The plaintiff claimed that his friend stole it because they had been drinking together the previous night. However, when he woke up the next morning, it was gone."
“Isn’t that a hundred thousand baht in the back of the car?”
“Wh...what!!”
"A black Lexus with the license plate Kor Kor 2440. There's a black bag in the back legroom." Every word made the man who was complaining that his friend stole his money turn pale, but he still tried to make excuses.
“Y-you… how do you know what’s in there? You! You’re planning to steal it, aren’t you?!” The owner of the sharp eyes glanced over briefly before turning to look at his subordinate.
“Keep them both locked up. Release them when they sober up.”
"Yes, Captain Jade."
“Huh! W-wait a minute!”
"Hey, I'm not wrong. What's going on?"
“Oh, is that so? Then you can go back.” Jade raised his coffee cup and drank it all before stretching himself out a bit to relieve his fatigue.
"How do you know he's innocent?" A voice from the side made him turn. His figure and face were unfamiliar, and his clothes were so neat. No matter how you look at him, he definitely didn't seem like someone who was going to report something to the police.
He asked, “It’s probably because I accidentally overheard this man talking on the phone about trying to trick him out of a hundred thousand baht.” Jade gave the person a teasing smile.
Earlier, he had gone out to buy coffee and overheard the man kneeling on the ground talking on the phone. It wouldn't have been so interesting if the conversation hadn't been so deceptive, and the victim sleeping in the passenger seat hadn't woken up. He only noticed the wallet because the car was parked right next to his.
“Hello. Uh, uh, he’s drunk, you know. Wait until he pays the full 100,000 baht, and then he’ll flee to another province. Did I get the content of your phone call right?” The flustered expression and hesitant words were evidence that everyone noticed.
“Should I file a report?”
"Report! I'll definitely put you in jail, you damn friend!"
Jade smiled at the pair before nodding to his subordinates to continue. He also turned to smile at the people standing and watching.
"And you? Did you come to file a report, or do you have some business?"
"I'm here to work." Jade looked the person in front of him over from head to toe again. This attitude...
“New inspector?”
"yes"
"Ha!"
"Hoy!"
“What?!” The officers who heard the shout ran around, almost abandoning the case they were working on.
"Hello, Inspector!!!"
The unison shouts caused the newly greeted inspector to shake his head slightly, only for a small laugh to come from the tall man in front.
"Don't make a big deal out of it. Let's just get on with our work." Everyone looked at each other nervously. Usually, when a high-ranking police officer came, there would be a big welcome and many ceremonies. But this new police lieutenant, besides looking young, didn't care about his rank or anything. Jade saw his subordinates looking at him as if they were asking for help with a decision, so he waved his hand to ignore the annoyance and turned to face the person in front of him.
"Come, I'll show you to your room." Jade led the way to the office upstairs, which had been thoroughly cleaned. However, it still looked empty, as no one had dared to redecorate it, fearing it would be displeased and reprimanded. "I, Jade Jaruwat, am the boss here."
"I'm Khamin," he said, looking at the back of the person who had walked in to inspect the area beneath his white shirt. Judging from his demeanour and way of speaking, he couldn't tell if he was arrogant and haughty. If he were, it would be difficult to work with him. He didn't like that type of person at all.
"Do you want the badge? Or is the room too small?" Jade said, trying to guess. Khamin sighed after hearing this, then turned to look at him fearlessly.
“If I say it’s too small, will you give me another room?”
"If you're planning on coming here just to sit and work at a desk, this room should be enough."
"And how big is the room for an unemployed captain to stand and talk to me like this?" Jade smiled with satisfaction because his lips really matched that arrogant face.
Khamin leaned against his desk before looking at the man in front of him. His annoying demeanour and his unruly behaviour from head to toe made him seem like an easy person to work with. However, his subordinates must have respected him and obeyed his orders quite a bit, judging by the events down there. It was best to just live without problems, as they would be working together for a long time.
"If you want something... go get it yourself. But if you want to ask, I'm in the room next door." Jade pointed to a room next door, separated only by clear glass. He probably needed to buy curtains to hang up.
As the other party walked out, Khamin sighed at the inauspicious start to the day. He had been sent here to replace the previous inspector because headquarters thought he was just a young man who had been promoted earlier than most. Who knew how much he had to prove himself to get here?
Upon entering, he walked around the room to make sure there were no bugs or cameras. Who said that this industry was clean? It was more like clear water on top, covered in mud at the bottom. Nothing could be trusted.
Jade sat watching the new police lieutenant walk around the room for a long time before sitting down in a chair with a relaxed and cautious demeanour. He was the same age as him, but had risen to such a high position. He must have experienced a lot. We would find out whether he had become a police lieutenant due to his abilities, luck, or simply flattery.
The documents Khamin needed to know were brought in at ten o'clock. He spent time reading and checking everything until noon, when there were only three knocks on the door before it was opened without permission.
"Shouldn't we wait for my permission first, Captain Jade?"
“Alright then.” Jade backed away, closed the door, and started knocking again. Khamin shook his head in exasperation before closing the document.
"Invite"
“That’s all. I came to invite the new police lieutenant to dinner.”
“I have work to do.”
“Just a document; that’s not work.”
“For me, whether it’s paperwork or field work, it’s work.”
"Let's put down all that paperwork and get to work," Jade said, handing the documents to the person sitting at their usual desk. Khamin was about to reach out to take them, but he pulled them back before he could. "Read them later."
His slender, well-shaped eyebrows furrowed as the man who had his hands in his pockets walked out. Khamin reluctantly followed him down the stairs. As he walked past, all the station staff greeted the people in front of him in a friendly manner, but he was still nervous.
"Um... are you going to eat lunch?"
"Yes"
"Go with the captain; I guarantee you'll get something delicious to eat. He's a big eater."
“That’s right. Drinking is number one. Oh!”
"Then why are you telling the lieutenant? The chief will beat you in the head." Khamin looked at the two officers making up before turning to look at the person who had left earlier.
"Then I'll be taking my leave. You guys can go ahead and do your best."
"Yes!"
“Yes!” The earnest salute made Khamin feel uneasy. At the police department, even with such a high rank, the people there would still try to suppress him.
“This way,” a voice called from the side of the station. When Khamin arrived, he found Jade straddling a large, shiny black motorcycle. A tall figure wearing a black helmet held out a white sheet to him.
"What"
"Wow, you're a real police officer? You don't even know what your helmet is."
"I mean, why give it to me?"
"Are you going to take legal action? It's a serious question. If there were a criminal waiting, he would have probably fled the country by now."
"I brought the car," Khamin pointed at his white Maserati. When Jade looked at him, he turned back and made an annoyed face.
“Take that one. You won’t catch up to me before the light turns red. Hurry up, I’m hungry, and I have work to do. It’s a waste of time.” Khamin rolled his eyes at the person straddling the motorcycle. He put his helmet on and walked behind them, straddling the seat with his legs. “You’re sitting that far away. If you fall off in the middle of the road, I won’t go back and get you.”
“I'm going to go for a while.”
"As you wish." The starter sounded loudly before the car slowly took off. But once past the station, Jade suddenly sped up, causing the vehicle to jerk. The person sitting further away with nothing to hold onto almost fell backwards, so he inadvertently grabbed onto the thick waist and shouted curses over the wind.
“Are you crazy! Did you buy a driver’s license or something?!”
"I can't hear you!" Jade shouted back against the wind, then sped up again until the person behind him had to grab his waist with both hands. Under the black helmet, there was a smug smile that no one else could see.
After twenty minutes, they arrived at a beachside restaurant. Khamin watched the broad-backed man walk into the restaurant, whistling and greeting the staff in a friendly manner.
"Do you want the same thing as before, Captain?"
“Same as usual, bro. Today I want two.”
Helmet in hand. “Hey, is there ever a day when you don’t have two? Then who’s that?” The plump shop owner turned to look at the person still standing in front of the shop with a helmet.
"You can stand and eat there if you want." Jade walked over to get some water before walking back to the table and raising an eyebrow at Khamin.
"Come in. Sit comfortably. What would you like?" Khamin gave the owner a polite smile before walking over to sit at the table with the person he had brought.
"Order it. Everything here is delicious." Jade slid the glass he had just reserved for the person across from him. "Consider it a welcome party for the new lieutenant."
"Oh, so this is the new lieutenant? Then go ahead and order. What do you want to eat? I'll treat you to this meal."
"Thank you. Then I'll have the small noodles with seafood tom yum."
"Okay, please wait a moment." After the shop owner left, Khamin turned to look at Jade's face again.
“Where are the documents you wanted me to see?”
“Take this.” Jade handed the documents in the envelope to Khamin, who was frowning, as if everything in his life were serious. After reading for a while, Khamin looked up at the person who had been resting his chin on his hand, looking at him for a while.
“When should I start the case?”
"This evening"
"Then let's meet there."
“I’m working on a case at the club, not in court. So, don’t come dressed in full uniform, in case you didn’t know.”
“I’m here as a police lieutenant today. That doesn’t mean I just became a police officer yesterday. I know what should and shouldn’t be done.”
“Then that's good.”
“I can handle this case alone. If you feel uncomfortable, we can work together.”
“I just want to evaluate the new inspector a bit. I want to know if what they say is true.”
"So what did you hear? I'll tell you if it's true." Jade smiled before leaning in closer to Khamin.
"They say you're smart, quick-witted, and organised... but you're arrogant, stubborn, and self-centred, making you incapable of working in a team."
The smile that gradually appeared at the corner of his mouth made Khamin feel itchier than usual. "Now I can prove two things: One, you're quick-witted, and two, you're as charming as I've heard."
