The young man was petite, standing at about 162 centimetres tall. His face leaned toward the cute side, with fair skin typical of Chinese heritage. His fine, silky black hair framed his features, and his jet-black eyes, as dark as onyx, were large and round with distinct double eyelids. Thick, long eyelashes framed his gaze, and his nose was perfectly straight. His lips were naturally red, full, and bow-shaped, often pouting together in a way that clearly hinted at his stubborn personality.
Ocean, or Samut Sarutnun, was dressed in a mint-green long-sleeved shirt, a forest-green tie, and navy-blue slacks. A blazer matching his pants was draped over his arm as he briskly climbed out of the Silom MRT station.
His best friend, Oat, had advised him earlier that if he didn't want to sweat buckets walking to the Skytrain station, he should get off here and grab a motorbike taxi. That would be way more convenient.
"Which one's more expensive?" Samut, ever the penny-pincher, had asked.
"Ugh, it's only a few baht difference. Just choose one... Do you want to spend a bit more or end up drenched in sweat?" Oat had replied bluntly, not sparing Samut's feelings one bit.
In truth, Samut wasn't poor. His mother owned a large cold storage business in the south, and his older brother, Chonlatee, had recently expanded the family business into logistics. However, Samut’s stinginess was deeply ingrained, thanks to his mother, who instilled a value for money in him from a young age.
After graduating with a degree in Business Administration, majoring in Logistics, from a prestigious university in the south, his mother and brother had expected him to immediately join the family business. But the youngest member of the family had protested loudly.
"No! I'm not doing it! I want to find a job and gain experience in Bangkok!"
"Experience in what? Getting scammed? Why go to Bangkok just to let people take advantage of you? You're so gullible and naive!"
His brother's blunt, scolding tone hit him hard, with no attempt to soften the blow.
"Ouch!"
The imaginary sound of a dagger stabbing his pride echoed in Samut's mind. If this were a martial arts movie, this scene would definitely include a dramatic blood-spitting effect.
"Bro! No matter what, I'm not doing it! Not now... Mom, please, my lovely mom, let me work in Bangkok for two, three, four, or even five years, please?" Samut turned to plead with his mother instead.
Sinee sighed deeply....Was it her fault for spoiling her youngest all these years?
Thankfully, Samut wasn't a troublemaker or someone who strayed off the right path.
"I'm not getting involved in this. Go negotiate with your brother yourself."
And with that, Sinee quickly excused herself to attend to work, leaving Chonlatee to let out a heavy sigh at his little brother.
"Big bro, please! The best brother in the world! Let me work in Bangkok, pretty please? I promise I won't stay long— definitely not more than eight years-and then I'll come back to help out here."
His beautiful dark orbs blinked rapidly in the way that always worked to his advantage. Chonlatee paused. He didn't actually have an issue with his younger brother not joining the family business right away. He just couldn't shake the feeling that samuteagerness to leave was as if he were running off with someone. Narrowing his eyes suspiciously, he decided to test the waters.
"Are you planning to follow Oat?"
Samut’s eyes widened. How did my brother figure that out? But in the end, he didn't deny it. He'd never lied or hidden his sexual orientation from his family. Luckily, his mother and brother were accepting. Nonetheless, he'd never explicitly mentioned that he liked his best friend from university.
"Uh-huh. So, can I?"
Samut looked at his brother with the most imploring puppy-dog eyes he could muster. Oat, or Sirichok, was a good-looking guy with a fit physique, resembling a Korean actor. Born and raised in Bangkok, he chose to study in the south out of rebellion and a desire for independence. When Samut met Sirichok, his heart was thoroughly captivated. But being stuck in the friend zone was like a tight noose around his heart, leaving him too scared to confess his feelings outright.
"Does he even like guys?" Chonlatee asked. Samut frowned but answered honestly. "I don't know. But he's never dated any girls."
"And if he does like you but refuses to move here, are you planning to stay in Bangkok forever? Have you thought about that?"
His brother's practical question made Samut’s shoulders slump. Chonlatee sighed again. He had a soft spot for his little brother, especially since they were eight whole years apart. But he felt the need to be firm to counteract their mother's spoiling tendencies. Finally, Chonlatee made his decision.
“If you really want to go, I have conditions."
Samur's face lit up with a smile. "What conditions?"
“First, if nothing progresses within a year, you have to come back to Hat Yai at once." Chonlatee raised one finger.
"Deal." Samut nodded eagerly. “Fine. One year to win over my best friend. If nothing comes of it, then I'll accept that it isn't meant to be and go home.
Chonlatee raised a second finger. "Second, you'll stay in my condo... and pay 7,000 baht in rent each month."
Samur's eyes nearly popped out of his head, not because the rent was too much, but because the condo in question was one their mother had bought for Chonlatee during his university days in Bangkok. It was a luxurious condo with excellent security.
...But Mom bought it!
...Why do I have to pay rent?!
With a fresh graduate's starting salary of no more than 15,000 baht, losing 7,000 to rent would leave him with only 8,000. Although he wasn't extravagant and was naturally stingy, 8,000 baht in Bangkok's cost of living...Could anyone manage?
Before he could negotiate, his brother continued, raising a third finger like a scout making a pledge. "Third... all the money in your bank account will be frozen until you return home. I'll start with 10,000 baht. If you run out, just come back."
This time, not only did Samur's eyes bulge, but his mouth also hung open wide enough for a swarm of flies to lay eggs. The petite man immediately protested.
"Bro! You're acting as if you've never lived in Bangkok! After rent, I'll only have 8,000 left. That doesn't even include food and other expenses. How am I supposed to survive?!"
"If you can't, just come back." His brother nonchalantly dismissed his concerns. The conditions were obviously designed to make him return quickly.
"How am I supposed to flirt with a guy if I'm
broke?!" Samut looked up at Chonlatee with teary eyes. Can the rent be reduced to 3,000 baht, please?"
Chonlatee sighed and relented slightly. "5,000."
"4,000... final offer. Please, please, pretty please?"
"Deal... but if you can't manage, you're coming back. Got it?"
The younger brother pouted but ultimately agreed to the terms.
For love and lemons... uh, just for love, this Ocean is willing to do anything. I just need to get to Bangkok first.
