Thiartha's head slowly bobbed up and down as he leaned back in his office chair, his exhausted appearance indicating he hadn't slept since last night. The police officers at the station were all working in a hurry.
The atmosphere was filled with tension, but nothing could make him feel better, as the dragon was still without a trace.
The phone in his hand, which he had repeatedly dialled, was still unanswered. If it had been twenty-four hours, he would have been able to report a missing person according to the procedures. But just a few hours after the dragon had disappeared, he himself could hardly bear it.
"Sergeant, would you like to go back and rest first?" Nadol walked in with hot coffee in his hand and handed it to him with a worried look on his face.
"No, I can handle it." He answered firmly, but his expression and actions were opposite.
The sharp eyes that once shone with confidence have now dimmed. His condition does not at all match the nickname 'Sergeant Pan Leh'.
"Thiar, don't be so cocky. People can die from sleep deprivation, and you're not an angel," Kanin, who had followed him, said in a bored tone.
"But I still haven't found the dragon."
"But if you don't sleep, you might never see a dragon again for the rest of your life."
And those words seemed to have an effect, causing his close friend to pause for a moment before Kanin began to speak sharply.
“Go back. I’ll drive you home myself.”
He couldn't speak nicely; he had to do it in a forced manner. This time, Kanin gave his close friend a stern look. If Phuwin were here, he would have heard a gentlemanly scolding that hurt just as much.
“You come back.”
"I'll take care of it myself."
"Yes"
And finally, his best friend readily agreed. Kanin volunteered to drive Thiartha to Phiromsamorn's house. But along the way, he had to ask something he wanted to know.
"Why did he go live at your house?"
“It's complicated.”
“It’s been complicated since you were transferred here.”
"Okay, when I'm ready, I'll tell you guys."
"You seem to be overly concerned about the dragon," the young captain's voice was laced with suspicion. These two must have something going on.
His sharp eyes glanced at the Chiang Rai captain for a moment before he thought to himself, "Which role should I choose? The role of a leader or the role of a husband?" No matter what role he had, he would be worried about them all.
When he didn't get an answer, Kanin knew he shouldn't ask further or pester him. Personal matters were personal matters. If he wanted to open his mouth to tell him, he was ready to listen.
The car slowly moved towards the beautiful house. Captain Kanin walked in to send the person who looked ill off, but he had to meet Khunying Pharadda Klai. She was already waiting, and her face showed an equally worried expression.
"Did you agree to meet your younger brother, my son?" Her voice was gentle but filled with anxiety as soon as her son appeared.
"I haven't found him yet, Mom."
"Oh my god! Mom called Busaba and asked, 'You're not going home, my child. Where are you going?" Mother almost collapsed, but she still tried to keep her wits about him.
"Madam, I think I should let Thiar rest for now. I'll go back and take care of things later."
The mother nodded in understanding and looked at her son, who should rest as Captain Kanin had said.
"Thiar, go to sleep first, son."
"Yes, I think I'll sleep for about an hour."
"Thiartha, please sleep for four or five hours. One hour is not enough," the lady tried to persuade him.
“One hour is more than enough, Mother.” The son’s voice was so firm that his mother could not resist.
“Sigh, that’s fine, but don’t forget, my child. If your body can’t take it anymore, how can you help anyone?”
"You really should rest. You can't just sleep and then get up and call this person and that person again." And Kanin still insisted, emphasising it again.
The hour had passed as he had stated, without missing or exceeding. In fact, it was even earlier than the time because Thiartha had woken up before the alarm clock. Instinct mixed with anxiety pulled him to open his eyes immediately. The first thing he did was quickly call his wife's number. The answer was the same as before: the number you called did not exist.
The system's voice kept repeating as the clock on the wall struck noon. Thiar hurried into the bathroom to do his daily routine and headed straight to the Chiang Mai City Police Station.
The bright midday sunlight filtered through the window film into the car. The young police officer's indigo eyes stared into the distance. His gaze seemed focused but empty. His mind was filled with thoughts of dragon.
“Where are you going?”
“I shouldn’t have let you move here.”
If he had been firmer with his mother, insisted on it, or had not thought of the ridiculous idea of getting married to change his fate, by now the dragon would have moved back to Mae Sai, and this crazy thing would not have happened. His mind was tense as if it was going to explode. His hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly that veins were bulging out. He continued to steer the car forward at high speed. Suddenly, a ringtone came from his phone. Thiartha was startled slightly before pressing the answer button immediately.
(Thia, it's your father.) The deep voice of an important commander he knew well rang out, causing Thiar to take a deep breath.
(Mom already told your Dad, have you seen your little brother yet?)
“Not yet, Dad.”
(Father's line reported that he wanted to be careful of the spirits.)
So it's Saming? The son didn't answer anything and continued to listen intently to the next sentence.
(It's not normal to move the case my son is working on to Lampang. And I'm not sure if the dragon's disappearance is related.)
(But don't trust Saming at all.)
His brain was working hard, processing quickly, his breathing getting heavier a little as his father's words rhymed with what one of the Black Bulls had said earlier.
"If I told you it was someone close to you, would you believe me?"
Damn it!
Thiartha could hardly have expected this. Saming was not an untrustworthy person. He was a good policeman, polite and gentle. Moreover, from his actions, it was clear that he liked Mangkorn very much. No matter what, it was impossible.
The engine revved again. The young police officer hurried to the police station, and as soon as he stepped inside, he saw the person his father had warned him about earlier.
"There he is, Inspector Thiar is here." Nadol looked over with a startled expression, along with the others who were looking at Thiartha. It seemed like something was happening.
"You, Inspector Saming, have a clue about the dragon," Kanin said.
"How?"
“Follow me.”
The young police officer followed his friend to the CCTV control room. Although many of the cameras were out of order, the images from the working ones were displayed on a large screen. There was a black car with almost blackout film. The faint shadow of a person inside was visible enough to make out his identity.
The person sitting in the passenger seat, with his head resting against the glass, resembles a dragon.
“Where is this car headed?”
“The last place the camera caught was at the foot of Doi Saket.” The connecting road between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai provinces.
“Then you all split up your forces and go immediately.”
"Acknowledged, Inspector."
The stern voice of the master commanded. Nadol received the order and proceeded immediately. Meanwhile, Thiartha secretly glanced at Saming from time to time. His demeanour showed he was equally worried and anxious, but some of his body language did not.
"Thiar ordered the team to take the highway, while I'll take the other route," Saming said, referring to the route to Doi Saket from Chiang Mai city. Both routes can be taken via Highway 118 or via Somphot Chiang Mai Seven Hundred Years Road.
“I can’t wait. I don’t want to miss out. We have to find the dragon as quickly as possible,” the classmate continued.
"I'm worried about you, you son of a bitch. Don't let me find out who did it."
His sharp jaw clenched together, and his eyes lit up. Thiartha nodded in response, and when he received permission, Inspector Muang Lampang continued.
There were only a few police officers left in the station, but the one he was most concerned about was still there. Kanin began to understand why his friend didn't lead a team to search for him himself. But before he could ask anything, Thiar called his friend into a meeting.
"You, follow me into the room," Kanin was called into the meeting room with a serious expression on his face.
Inside the private conference room, Thiar is opening some documents sent by his father. It is Saming's financial trail, with irregular money flowing in and out.
"What are you trying to say, Thiar?"
"Saming," Thiartha said the name calmly. "Don't you feel that it's too much of a coincidence?"
“He was the last one with the dragon. He came across us last night. Now he says he found a clue.”
"That's a bit strange." Kanin paused for a moment before replying in a serious tone, "When I questioned the Black Bull gang, one of them said someone close to us was behind it. I don’t know if he was joking or serious.”
Thiartha gritted his teeth and spoke, his eyes filled with rage.
"And now, I don't trust Saming at all."
“What are you going to do next?”
"I'll follow him myself."
"You be careful. If anything happens, send a signal immediately. I'm ready to send reinforcements," Kanin replied immediately.
Saming didn't leave immediately after finishing speaking, and he didn't ask for reinforcements, which only increased the suspicion. Moments later, when the other party drove away from the police station, Thiartha himself slowly followed at a suitable distance.
The road the car in front chose was not the one it had previously indicated. It was the complete opposite. It was a bypass road that stretched towards Lamphun and Lampang provinces.
"Is it you, Saming, who's doing all these shitty things?" Pretending to be concerned, acting trustworthy.
"You're not any better than me."
Thiartha kept his distance as far as possible. After another hour, his car turned into a small alley that was becoming deserted. Of course, if he followed it like this, he would know one hundred per cent.
The Chiang Mai police lieutenant decided to park the car at a safe distance. His sapphire eyes stared at the back of Saming's car as it disappeared into a deserted alley. He clenched his jaw so hard he could hear it. He was almost certain that his suspicions might not be wrong.
This area is deserted and uninhabited.
The thick hand slowly shifted the car into neutral, letting it come to a complete stop on the side of the road. The tall figure leaned back against the seat, his handsome face sighing, letting out a long, drawn-out breath before raising his hand to wipe his face, which was filled with stress. His thoughts were constantly racing.
“What the hell are you doing, Saming?” A soft murmur sounded like a question that no one could answer.
He took a deep breath, gathered his remaining wits, and reached out his large handgun to check its magazine. It was still full, ready for any possible situation.
The police lieutenant slowly and carefully opened the car door, the sound of boots hitting the ground softly audible. He tried not to attract attention.
